I'm going to hold off on purchasing it now. Maybe Paramount will be smart and bundle it with the remake when it comes to home-video (like how Fox did with The Day the Earth Stood Still).
I recently sold my John Wayne Century Collection on DVD. It sure would be nice if Paramount would come out of hibernation and release a Wayne boxset on blu-ray. |

so excited that it is not a dnr disaster and that it looks pretty good!
thank you paramount. ![]() you have really made my day big-time. I cannot WAIT for more paramount Wayne titles. god I hope they don't make us wait another 3 years or something for another one. honestly, at this point, I'd be happy with 3 a year until all the Paramount ones are out. I don't think that's asking too much. I'm not sure the total number--even though I own every one--but I'd say it's around 14 or so titles remaining. Last edited by Arkadin; 12-14-2010 at 02:17 AM. |

I just picked this up at Walmart for $15.
It's not my fave of his films, I prefer BIG JAKE and EL DORADO, but for the price it's a good buy. I also felt his performance in THE SHOOTIST deserved the Oscar more than this......this just seemed likea 30 years in the business reward to me. |

I pre-ordered from Amazon and it says "Temporarily Unavailable" right now, and my order didn't get shipped.
![]() damn I hate it when that happens. guess I'm going to search it out. as far as AVS saying it's a dnr disaster, I'm not surprised one bit that they are saying that. From the reviews and screenshots, it just doesn't look anything as bad as some Paramount releases imo--say some of the Star Trek films--so that is why I am happy. There was no way in hell that this release wouldn't get panned at AVS because it is clearly not based on a new master. I think we all know that any Paramount Wayne blu release will be based on the 2005-2007 dvd masters. so they should all look similar to this release. Releases based on old dvd masters get panned at AVS 99% of the time and called "DNR disasters" no new news there. ![]() Last edited by Arkadin; 12-14-2010 at 01:36 PM. |

![]() Those screenshots at DVDbeaver look pretty darn good to me, and they give the DTS Master Audio very high marks. Last edited by The Duke; 12-14-2010 at 02:38 PM. |

Judging from DVDBeaver's shots, i think it does look like DNR was applied (the transfer was presumably from 3-4 years ago). Just look at the general blotchiness of some of those screenshots, especially the one of Mattie talking to Cogburn under the "more caps" section. That being said, they didn't go overboard and it still looks very watchable.

I believe every single Blu-ray release has DNR applied to it. So when you watched the Blu-ray did you think there were only some scene that looked like there was too much DNR or was it the whole thing?

EVERY single time a studio uses an old dvd based master you are going to have DNR on the blu-ray because it has already been applied.
numerous "experts" have discussed this issue. end of story. the extent of the dnr is what matters, and in this case, it doesn't appear that there is terrible overdone dnr on this bd which adversely affects every scene or anything like that. Is it really noticeable in a few specific scenes? of course most likely it is. we all know what these types of releases look like, and at the end of the day it is what it is. of course I want to play the release on my display to get a better sense of how good or bad this bd is, but I'm not overly concerned at the moment. Every blu-ray has smudged, plasticy faces? I think not.
This isn't a high profile release, so I didn't have high expectations, but it's still meh at best. Smeary and digital. Go see Easy Rider for a 1969 film done right. |

People complaining about this film, shouldn't be disappointed with the transfer, but rather Paramount's decision to not generate a new master. I'll be picking this up sometime after Christmas, depending upon gift cards. |
