So, title says it all.
Please, dont choose movies based on "that you dont like but the majority likes" only. Also mention movies that you personally think (without others influence) that are great movies, just not your cup of tea. ![]() |

No sir. I am saying that any film that I personally dont like or think is good no matter how good the acting is or the cinematography, I wont consider it a great film but will give props to the aspects I enjoyed. As for every film I do like, I would not also consider every film I like to be great as some films can be guilty pleasures or just very amusing and very entertaining. I can the difference if a film is great or just enjoyable or both! Got Em!! |

![]() Maybe we're using "great" in different ways. Maybe you mean "really enjoyable to you"? I mean "widely acknowledged classics that are considered by most to have lasting artistic merit." Thinking that a film that you (or I, for that matter) didn't enjoy can't be a great film seems pretty narrow. You have said that the best movie series of all time is the Friday the 13th films. You also thought that North By Northwest was kind of dull. Most serious critics and film fans would disagree strongly with those opinions. You don't seem to enjoy many older films. "Really dated" comes up in a lot of your reviews. I would guess (and it's only a guess) that by your standards there would be few "great" films made before 1980, and no more than a tiny handful before the early 70's. For your personal tastes, that's fine (and maybe that's all you mean), but most would agree that there are many many great films that do not fall within your standards. Sorry to pick on you sir! I disagree with you most of the time, but I do enjoy your threads and posts. Last edited by charlieray1; 10-21-2010 at 04:34 PM. |

A few definitely come to mind with this topic:
2001: A Space Odyssey I can acknowledge the strong points of this film and Kubrick is a great visual director. But it starts off slow... picks up steam... then around the 2/3 mark it just loses me. One of those movies I recommend people watch without being able to lay my own claim of awesomeness to it. Akira Beautifully animated, especially for the 1980s, a complex film with interesting characters and a nice sci-fi exterior. Yet the story never resonates with me. The Dark Night This one is weird because the first time I saw it I loved it. Every time I've seen it since then the enjoyment level has really dropped to where now I don't ever want to watch it again. And I'm not sure why. But visually it is spot on. The characters are spot on. So many good things going for this title. Off hand that's all. There are probably other titles I could throw in here if I was looking at all movies ever, but my memory isn't that good. haha. |

Interesting question.
![]() For me I'd have to go with Aliens, because it's by far the most dated out of the four and didn't have as many greats moments as implied by its reputation, but I still think it's a good film and can understand why so many love it. ![]() |

if i can't get into a movie and i'm not enteretained a little, i dont usually give it a 2nd thought.
the only movie i can think of that i've seen that would fall into this type of category is Brokeback Mountain. i can appreciate the fact that it's a love story but i'd never watch it again. |

Probably too many to list, but regarding movies that are great but not my "cup of tea," the top ones that come to mind are:
"Casablanca." Probably will give it another try sometime. Back in the day when I saw it, I thought it had good visuals and all, but thought the story was dull. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." A well-made film and all, but I never saw the appeal of the "story." "Gone with the Wind." Actually not a bad film at all. Just a little long and sappy. It's one of those cases where I'm not really sure if I want to buy a copy or not... |
