Kurosawa films, This Is Spinal Tap, Chasing Amy. I already know this one is on Universal but should they hopefully someday go neutral I'd like to get the Criterion of Dazed and Confused. In the meantime I will watch it upconverted.

They being Criterion, we can guess with a high degree of accuracy that Seven Samurai, Seventh Seal, Brazil and Hidden Fortress will always get first crack at whatever new double, triple and/or quadruple-dip release excuse hits the studio...
![]() Once past the preliminaries, however, the only Criterion on my A-list shelf is Bergman's "The Magic Flute", and there's one made for Blu-ray. |

I'd like to see the whole catalog as well as all the HVE properties Image Entertainment nabbed when they nabbed Criterion from them. I want Fukasaku.

I was thinking Last Temptation too; that's still one of the ones that really surprised/fascinated me (having not seen the film before watching the Criterion DVD.). Many others that don't come immediately to mind, aside from the obvious. Berlin Alexanderplatz too.

The Masters of Cinema release of Kwaidan is one of the prime reasons for my preference for the British outfit.
Really, I wouldn't want to see the Criterion master of Kwaidan on Blu-ray, ever. But I'm still hopeful they'll learn from their past mistakes and do their Blu-rays properly from day one. At least they're better than Kino, the prime purveyor of silent cinema Stateside -- now those guys get it wrong more often than not. Still, the value of a Criterion is as much in the extras package as in the transfer quality -- which is why it's great that Disney and Sony offered the Criterion extras on the releases mentioned above, and why it's truly necessary to get Criterion into the high-def fold properly, and soon. |
