Default What do I tell my family?

What do I tell my family who I am trying to convince on how big of a deal Blu-ray discs are when their view is that there will always be a new format and that my Mom bought some Disney movies on Beta for her grandchildren (non of us her children are even married yet) and obviously now can't use those video tapes. My point is to not buy d.v.d.s right now because it will be a waste of money as the blu-ray versions of films will be far better for many reasons. My brother is like well why not just keep waiting as there will always be something better.

Let me kind of work backwards here:

Your brother is someone who simply will never buy anything. He'll always "chase the rainbow" which is all too easy to do in the world of consumer electronics.

On the other hand, I'd be as honest as I could with the family: You're an HD nut and you want the best now and you understand the risks that go with ANY early adoption/first generation scenario.

Visual aid: Put on whatever your best HD channels are right now. It'll probably be the HD networks. Tell your family you want all your movies to look like that and you're anxious to get started.

Seeing is believing.

In the end, it's an impossible battle to convince "non HT" and "non AV" enthusisasts of our ways.

They have to understand that we have a sickness and addiction and deal with it accordingly.

That sounds like a great start. As for myself, my wife knows that I'm a huge fan of music and movies and that I always want the best quality possible. She's not always crazy about the expense but she does support my decisions. In fact, she was the one who picked out my current Mits HDTV. I originally purchased a less expensive TV and she suggested I return it and get the Mits. To this day I'm still in awe at how lucky I am to have her. It was the kind of thing every husband dreams about.

You really have to go back to the beginning...

Divorce your wife.

Find a new wife that really enjoys television and movies.

Use the words I did...

"We aren't buying anymore DVDs because HD discs are coming out in about a year and we aren't going to waste money when we KNOW we want to get them in better quality. Until then, we can rent."

Her reply...
"Great, works for me."

It's been about 18 months now since that discussion and while a Madagascar or Incredibles has slipped into our collection, we are still patiently awaiting Blu-rays arrival.

You know what's kind of funny about this?

Without deliberate design or intent, I've noticed that for the past year or so, my DVD buying habits have GREATLY declined. And I'm someone who is not aggressively planning to early adopt. I've never early adopted in my life.

But as it stands. My DVD collection is more or less at a standstill, with some titles being trickled out in the form of trade in fodder at EB or Gamestop for a videogame so often.

It's like I've been preparing and conditioning myself for the inevitable advent of an HD disc for some time.

Certainly when I get my PS3, if nothing else, I will not buy anymore DVD's. If I go past that and early adopt, that will be only so much more true.
