Amazon says it's rated R with a 123 minute runtime. According to IMDB, the extended/uncut version is 123 minutes.

I just ordered Bad Boys (1983) from Amazon for $5.65.

A bunch of us in a running forum that I frequent got to talking about this movie, and I realized that it's been well over a decade since I got my fix of the soda can fight scene. Here's looking forward to revisiting this movie soon.

I still remember seeing this theatrically in 1983, it was pretty intense stuff for an 80's teen movie...especially when my friends and I had only seen Sean Penn in Fast Times At Ridgemont High the year previous; it was like seeing a completely different person! I still think he's one hell of an actor.

Last night, I watched my Lionsgate Blu-ray of Bad Boys (1983).

When I first saw Bad Boys back in the day, it really shook me up. Even today, it's an unrelentingly gritty film that does not flinch when it comes to violence, rape, and general maliciousness. The scene where Sean Penn bashes a couple of fellow juvenile prison inmates with a pillowcase full of soda cans is probably one of the most vicious scenes that compels me to cheer out loud whenever I see it.

Sean Penn is awesome, but Esai Morales almost steals the show. I recently revisited La Bamba, which stars Morales as Ritchie Valens's brother, and I also remember him from a couple of Miami Vice episodes.

Rick Rosenthal had directed Halloween II just before helming Bad Boys, and, at one point early in the film, a theater marquee is shown with "Halloween II con Jamie Lee Curtis." Jame Lee Curtis even has a split-second cameo early in the film as a random street passerby.

This Lionsgate Blu-ray is not exactly demo material, but the movie looks quite good, and the presentation is well-suited for the film's gritty approach. Rick Rosenthal's commentary track is engaging.

Also, you've got to love the visible cameraman during the final fight in Bad Boys. In all fairness, though, i didn't even notice it until it was pointed out to me.

Lol same here. Great review btw. Bad Boys has always been a favorite of mine and is possibly my favorite Sean Penn film which is saying a lot!

Ouch! You're right. I had New York City on the mind. I corrected my post.

(To those of us who live in the south, these 1980s New York City and Chicago movies come off as similar.)

One of those movies I probably watched 10x on premium cable back in the day. Sean Penn was a force of nature in that period. He had something his peers could not touch. Definitely made him stand out among all of the 80s bombast and excess. I miss that guy. Haven't seen a nuanced, compelling Penn performance in ages.

Penn and Morales are great, and watching it today it's interesting to see actors like Clancy Brown and Ferris Bueller's Alan Ruck among the cast. When I saw this in '83, I was also really impressed by Ally Sheedy as Mick's girlfriend J.C....it was my first time seeing her in anything, and she quickly became one of my film crushes throughout the 80's.

Bad Boys '83 (to distinguish this from later films with the same name) is excellent, and one of Sean Penn's best movies. This story of teens sent to prison was very grim & well-done, and seemed more like a documentary than a feature film - and I mean that as a compliment.

The hopelessness of those who are incarcerated was very pronounced here - it's definitely one of the most realistic prison films I've seen.

I never even heard about this film when it was released, and remember renting the DVD (without knowing anything about it) from Blockbuster Video back in the early 200X's. It's definitely an underrated film that deserves a lot more recognition.

I've never watched it. It was one of those movies that was advertised on TBS back in the "Movies for guys who liked movies" days:

Back when TBS wasn't the complete joke that is now.

Anyway, I always skipped this one for some reason. Strange considering I grew up on gritty movies like 48 Hrs and Escape from Alcatraz. Honestly, I don't like Penn at all as a person, but he had a good run in the 80's and 90's. I might pick this one up seeing as it can be had for pretty cheap.

Just picked this up and can't wait to watch it. I remember back in the late 80s/ early 90s when FOX used to play movies on Monday's- Wednesday's and I saw this then and I loved it.

Anyone who's a fan of Penn from this era should also check out At Close Range. It's a terrific movie that holds up really well today still. This movie also aired during the above time period. It desperately needs a blu release though.

At Close Range is one of my favorite films (along with Bad Boys). I think it's Christopher Walken's best performance and he plays one of the top 5 most terrifying villains in film history in it IMHO. It actually already has a blu ray through Twilight Time but it looks to be sold out unfortunately.

funny that you bring that up, i've been heavy into a joe bob brigs mood and have been binging tons of old monster vision and drive-in theatre programing.
i remember watching this on kdfi channel 7 dfw as a kid. back when their main-stay of programming was king of the hill repeats and baseball.
i used to have a routine where i would watch the channel for king of the hill before the simpsons at 6:30 on wb 33 dfw.
i remember one day they showed this movie, i must have been in either 2-5th grade and was so mezemerized by it.
picked up the blu early this year and its so eerie to see all these actors young af.
sean penn, esai, ally, alan ruck, clancy brown.....
it's so pulpy and so gritty, and a good prison movie.
pairs up nicely with blood in blood out/american me
and also curising/vice squad.

The transfer is that, a transfer to 1080p, and it works.
nothing to show off, but soft in places and sharp in others which i guess is par for the course.

i kinda wanna do a joe bob count for this, but it would be sooo off.
vending machine- fu. boom box fu. 1 dead little brother. maybe some ally sheedy boobs. 1 rape. 1 dead cameron from ferris bueller. gratuitous warriors gang rip offs. 2 bad drug deals. 2nd floor balcony -fu.
i give it 3 out of 4 stars.

Just re-watched Bad Boys & it was even better this time around; the movie seems to get better with each subsequent viewing. Great early '80's gritty Chicago setting & an incredible, seemingly realistic depiction of life in a rough juvenile prison.

In addition to a great performance by Penn, interesting to see early roles of A. Sheedy, A. Ruck, C. Brown, and E. Morales.

Had no idea the cameraman was in the final fight scene until I just read this thread, and I've seen the movie numerous times - very funny.

Completely agree that this is an extremely underrated film. I'm a big movie fan, and had never even heard of BB prior to the early 200X's - when I rented the DVD at Blockbuster. I never remember it playing on TV in the '80's or '90's (though I never had cable), nor did I ever remember seeing it on VHS tape (though I know it was available on VHS). Not saying it wasn't out there, just that it was not a high-profile film.

Whenever you hear talk about the Bad Boys movie it's usually the other one starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. A real shame this gem with Penn and Morales gets shoved under the rug. Love the Billy Squier tunes in this.

Been wanting to get this for a long time, but still haven't pulled the trigger to upgrade my old uncut anchor bay dvd because of picture quality reviews. I know this release has a lot of dnr added but i still see reviews saying it trounces the dvd, but I can never find a screenshot comparison between this and the anchor bay dvd. Can anyone say whether it would be worth buying this blu, but keeping the anchor bay dvd for the better grain exposure? Or does this blu offer an overall more pleasing AND detailed image despite the added dnr?
