Bad Boys '83 (to distinguish this from later films with the same name) is excellent, and one of Sean Penn's best movies. This story of teens sent to prison was very grim & well-done, and seemed more like a documentary than a feature film - and I mean that as a compliment.

The hopelessness of those who are incarcerated was very pronounced here - it's definitely one of the most realistic prison films I've seen.

I never even heard about this film when it was released, and remember renting the DVD (without knowing anything about it) from Blockbuster Video back in the early 200X's. It's definitely an underrated film that deserves a lot more recognition.

I've never watched it. It was one of those movies that was advertised on TBS back in the "Movies for guys who liked movies" days:

Anyway, I always skipped this one for some reason. Strange considering I grew up on gritty movies like 48 Hrs and Escape from Alcatraz. Honestly, I don't like Penn at all as a person, but he had a good run in the 80's and 90's. I might pick this one up seeing as it can be had for pretty cheap.
