TRON Sequel Gets Green-light - Blu-ray Forum

TORONTO -- Commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct "Tron," described as "the next chapter" of Disney's 1982 cult classic. Sean Bailey is producing via the Live Planet banner, as is Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film.

Kosinski, who last month signed on to helm the remake of "Logan's Run" for Warner Bros. Pictures, will oversee the visual development of the project and have input on the script, which is being written by "Lost" scribes Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Story details are being kept secret.

The original, about a computer programr thrust into a computer and forced to fight in games he helped create, is remembered for its sci-fi gladiator-style battles and groundbreaking special effects. It was the first movie to use computer-generated images instead of models and other optical effects in conjunction with live action. The arcade game based on the movie was so popular that it earned more than the movie.

When making the original, in order to convince the studio to take a chance on a first-time director, Lisberger shot a test reel, financed by the studio, involving the deadly Frisbee battle. In a case of historical synchronicity, sources said one of the things Kosinski will be doing is working on a sequence involving the movie's Light Cycles to work out his vision for the movie. Sources also said visual effects personnel, for many of whom "Tron" was an inspiration to enter the business, already are jockeying for pole position to work on the sequence.

Brigham Taylor is overseeing for Disney.

Kosinski is a former architect whose specs caught the attention of director David Fincher, who convinced Kosinski to move to Los Angeles, where he joined the director at commercial house Anonymous Content. Kosinski then moved quickly up the ladder, eventually directing award-winning spots for Nike, Apple and Nintendo that gained notice for their use of computer technology that erased the lines between reality and CGI.

Kosinski is repped by Endeavor and Michael Sugar and Bard Dorros at Anonymous Content.

That's freakin awesome!!!! I love TRON and this is awesome news. With a sequel coming soon this might prompt Disney to release TRON on Blu-ray sooner rather than later. That would also make an awesome Blu vs. HD movie as well. Tron and the other good guys are Blue and Sark, Master Control and their cronies are Red...

I really liked Tron, but I wish they wouldn't do this. I'd like to see someone put forth some effort and try to create something original. IMHO.

I agree. Enough with the remakes already. Leave the classics alone. I am sure they will botch this one to hell and back.

Um it isn't a remake. It says in the pasted article "Commercial director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct "Tron," described as "the next chapter" of Disney's 1982 cult classic." So it sounds to me like a sequel. The remake was for Logan's Run.

WOO HOO! It is Sark, not Zark.

I have models of the Lightcycles in Red, Yellow and Blue. Not to mention Tank and Recognizer dioramas. Dang, I'm going to make that trip to the future sooner than later. I can't wait!

You kidding me? It was the most original story of it's time next to E.T. Have you played the game? It is a visual feast. Tron 2.0 on Blu-ray will be an awe inspired jaw dropping drool feast!

Doh...my bad. I should have know better, must proof read next time. Corrected. I have been waiting for a Tron sequel for some time now. As is I think Tron was way ahead of it's time. The original is just screaming for a Blu-ray...Hear that Disney?!?

Heh, TRON 2.0 can be OUR Transformers.

Look at how popular The Matrix has become, this movie is begging for that audience, let alone its own.

The original is too classic to remake. The style and feel will never be reproduced. This sequel is in order!

I know that Tron was a very original story, but there is nothing original about a sequel designed to do nothing except feed off the nostalgia of Gen X-er's.

Unfortunately there's a huge market for people who want to feel that the culture of their childhood is cool again, so this movie will make a ton of money whether it's good or not.

I, for one, can't wait! I'll give the writers (From LOST, no less!) the benefit of the doubt. And if Lisberger is on board, then hopefully he'll maintain quality.

Let's just hope this guy doesn't get a cameo:
