Thumbs up TV Box Sets: Keep 'em looking like new...

As I look at all of the collections on BD.com, I see that everybody's DVDs and BDs are in immaculate condition. (Almost as if they've never been watched).

How do you guys keep the corners so sharp on cardboard sets? Do you keep the shrink wrap on the box set and only slit it to get the discs out?

I'm pretty obsessive about my movie collection, and even mine have some compression dents in the boxes and worn corners.

Back in 2002, I bought The Simpsons DVD boxsets. $54.99 retail!! I made the mistake of loaning them out to a friend. Long story short, I got the Box set back and it looked as if he drove over it with his car. Those kinds of things end a friendship

Nowadays IF I lend out a disc, I always send the disc in a slim jewel case. I also do this when going on road trips etc. Who else does this?

I'm sure many people are in my position, so I figured a thread was a good idea. With 57 TV DVD/BD sets, I have to protect my investment

I leave my boxs on the shelf. Simple as that.

Same here I leave all my boxes on the shelf and only remove them to take the disc out and then it goes right back on the shelf. I have a few with dents but that's becuase they happened at the store and were cheap enough I decided to live with it but I'd say 99% of my collection is in perfect condition.

Do you use a CD folder or have you archived them on a hard drive?

Honestly, I watch them often, but am very careful when taking them out of the bookcase. I can't see myself doing a CD folder, because it scatters the collection. It works for some people though.

Remember those poly jackets for LPs and Laserdiscs? I'm surprised those were never made for cardboard CD and DVD cases (Unfortunately, most Box Sets aren't one size fits all).

No. I just pull the disk out, pop it in, put the case on the shelf.

Tip one:Don't lend your media to anyone including family.
Tip two:You are the only one authorized to handle your media.
That is all.

Agreed. That is our household rule. My family members know the consequences of touching my beloved movie collection.

Unfortunately, I learned that a bit late with my Simpsons DVD.

Having learned the hard way over the years with music CD's NEVER put your discs in a cd folder! The fabric scratches the hell out of your discs or at the very least will leave those weird circular imperfections on the disc that you can only get from a cd case. My cd's and movies go from the cases to the players and than right back.

My cases have the same corner issues as everybody else, but usually those come from how they where in the store when I bought them. Don't stack your cases horizontally, I learned from being a Vinyl record collector for a long time, vertical is the only way to store things because you will destroy the cardboard by laying them down horizontally, the weight will start to crush the cardboard.

I don't know what I'm more shocked by, that Amazon would ship something that thrashed, or that you bought a season of 7th Heaven.

I usually don't have that problem with Amazon. I did when I ordered a few Blu-rays with slipcovers around the latter part of last year, but I'm hoping that was just because they were really busy because of the holidays. I know that sounds like an excuse, but I almost always would get slipcovers in pristine condition from them before. I'll see how my Deadwood Blu-ray arrives on Tuesday.

Other than that, most of my Blu-ray collection is in really good condition. I'm usually the only one to handle my discs, so they always stay looking brand new. Cases are all in pretty good condition for the same reason. Slipcovers are as well for the most part, except for the already mentioned ones that arrived otherwise and then the occasional damaged corner or two from wear and when I moved my collection to my new media tower. I try to keep fingerprints to a minimum, but you can only do so much for that of course.

Mine remain on the shelf at ALL times, including while I'm viewing the disc. It has it's allocated spot and that's where it stays. Some have acquired a rounded corner or small indent over the years, but for the most part they are in the same condition as the day of purchase.
As far as lending them out...NO WAY. I tell people to go purchase them like I did or go rent them for $6. If they don't like it...then BOO HOO for them.

Yep do the same thing my box set's or movies never leave the shelf unless I am taking the disc out or putting it in and then it goes right back to where I got it. I also never lend out any of my movies no matter what or who that person is.

borrowed movies go out w/o slip covers or in an old beat up case.

cases stay up high away from the kids when movies are being watched.

Default Boxset expanding

Does anyone notice the cardboard expanding on certain box sets? Particularly between the spin and the back.
