Default 'Top Gun' coming to theaters in 3-D

All I can say is O No.... Seriously

Tony Scott’s 1986 classic "Top Gun" starring Tom Cruise is being converted to 3-D for a theatrical release.

A four-minute 'world premiere' preview of the converted film--featuring the 'Danger Zone' aerial flight sequence -- was screened Monday at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam.

The 2-D to 3-D conversion is being accomplished at Legend3D, whose CEO Rob Hummel introduced the clip as well as its unique business model during an IBC panel.

"We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3-D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense," Hummel said, explaining that Legend 3D is funding and doing the conversion for Paramount.

Story: '80s movie sequels we'd like to see
"As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3-D in early 2012, though I known they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward," he said, explaining that Legend 3D effectively has a revenue sharing deal with Paramount.

"I think 'Top Gun' lends itself to 3-D due to the aerial flight," he said of the project. "You can have fun with 3-D by bringing things off the screen if they are not attached to the edge of the screen."

Do you approve of this trend of old films being re-issued in 3-D? Discuss with us on Facebook.

Top Gun is many things. the last thing I would call it is a classic it's kind of like a porno lots of action and music with some acting thrown in.

What do you mean? Just cuz' they showed the guys playing shirtless volleyball in Super Slo-Mo with closeups on their glistening sweaty...

I guess you're right...

Seriously, not sure how I feel about this - I've enjoyed the flick & the Blu' is top notch as far as Audio goes (6.1 DTS-HD MA) & looks pretty good PQ wise. Wonder if Mr. Scott will give them the go ahead

If it's done right, seems like a title worthy of the 3D treatment. Other conversion jobs don't give me confidence though, not like this one has a choice.

I'm of the opinion that you just CAN'T WATCH Top Gun after the first "Hot Shots" movie--
They captured just the right preening-cool 80's note, you can't not find yourself quoting the jokes after that.

lol. Of all the movies to convert they pick this. Early Jerry Bruckheimer ridiculousness in glorious 3-D.

This movie seems like a music video for "Take my breath away"

But seriously if you object to the conversion don't see it but remember that your 2D Blu-Ray is not going to magically stop playing when the conversion comes out

Also remember that the 2D Blu-Ray is not going to magically convert into anything other than a s**t movie.
