The point of 3D is to make money. Without 3D premiums both in the theater and home market there would be no extra money. Rarely if ever do people go to see something just because its in 3D
The term "shoved down one's throat" doesn't mean, in any way, a gun is being put to one's head. Apples & oranges there!
When I say "shoved down one's throat" I mean studios are going out of their way to advertise 3D. Actually we don't live in a "free market"...perhaps a free society, but not "free market". If we do live in a "free market", please post directions to this market as many would be interested.
Again, I understand 3D technology costs more...thusly garnering a higher consumer cost. That's why I incorporated the word "wish" in my statement about 3D vs. 2D costs.
Your last statement couldn't be further from the truth! You're not thinking "outside the box" here. People have been going, for years, to places like DisneyLand & Universal theme parks, etc. to see rides/shows in 3D. I understand this is a blu-ray forum, and not a theme park forum...but the thought process still applies.

I am looking forward to seeing Top Gun in 3D. My problem is, my theater is crap when it comes to 3D. They never increase the brightness of the screen. So the picture is pretty dark.

If I knew it would help. I may say something to them. But they would probably lie and say," We do increase the brightness.

You can not really argue with them.

I had a similar problem with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The picture was often horribly dark. I really hope that this was simply my theater screwing up and not a problem with the conversion itself. I still have high hopes for the 3D Blu-Ray

The failure of theaters to properly calibrate 3D was one of the primary causes of the failure of 3D in the 50s. Though modern digital projecters are far less error prone then the duel strip projecters of the 50s they are still not completely fool proof. Theaters are really hurting the 3D market when they fail to properly compensate for the dimming of 3D glasses.

Once again stay on topic please. This is not a 2D vs 3D thread. Meaning discuss how Top Gun might look on 3D, will 3D affect the original director's intent, is Top Gun "dated" for 3D, who is handling the 3D conversion, what part of the movie might be/not be enahnced by 3D, will it be shown in sufficient theaters, ect.

I've always found Top Gun pretty weak.

If the Blu wasn't $6 at some point, then no way I would own it.

I did watch it ...

I do like 3D,... esp Blu Ray 3D.

(Apologies if it's off topic. I hope there is an audience for this if they go through with it.)

Top Gun is many things. the last thing I would call it is a classic it's kind of like a porno lots of action and music with some acting thrown in.

I hope they created a new digital master (maybe a new DI 4k).
If they use the current master (2006 master with dnr), the result is s*it.
I'm not interested the 3d edition, but i hope they will release a new remastered blu ray.

How is that prediction of The Lion King 3D bombing in the theaters working out?

3D needs to go away already, I don't see why studios like losing money
Lion King in 3D was #1 at the box office this past weekend by $16 million. just so you know even 2D movies are all about the $$$$.

I'm surprised that no one said "I have a need, a need for 3D".

Lion King was successful because a lot of parents wanted to take their kids to see the film on the big screen as they had first seen it 17 years ago themselves. I do believe THAT is the main reason it did so well. Had it been in 2D it would have done just as well. And this is coming from a heavy 3D supporter.

Top Gun and Titanic will have a much more difficult time trying to coerce those kinds of crowds in for ANY theatrical re-run, be it 2D or 3D. Personally, I will never watch Titanic again no matter what kind of incentive they tried to offer. Hell, they could offer to pay me $100 to watch it in theatres and even THAT wouldn't be worth my time. Top Gun, on the other hand, is a very fun film that I would love to see on the big screen AND in 3D no less. So, I'll be there to support its run wholeheartedly.
