I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. The ending was a little lackluster, but I guess the audience was supposed to be right there with the innkeepers and see what they saw. So it can be interpreted in many ways.

Yeah, The Innkeepers is almost like the complete opposite of The House of the Devil. The former has a lighter tone and a better start, while the latter is darker with a better end. If only Ti West combined those two parts together, he would have one truly awesome horror flick under his belt.

And I gotta add that Sara Paxton is incredibly adorable in what is probably her best role yet.

really loved this movie. great companion to HotD even though they are so different in tone. has a similar slow building creepiness to it.
i actually found the ending to Innkeepers much more satisfying than HotD, i thought the ending to that was a mess and seemed really out of place.

I agree. I thought the whole vibe of the film did not match the ending. Up to that point, it was a cute somewhat light horror film and to have it end like that....just did not fit the other 95% of the film. Such a shame really because had it ended better, I know I would buy the blu-ray when it came out, but there's no point now.

How'd you see it? Was it even released into theaters or did you see it some other way?

I loved House of the Devil and really enjoyed this. Loved the setting of the Yankee Pedlar and the performances by the two lead characters and Kelly McGillis were very good. However, I had issues with the ending as well. I'm looking forward to this hitting blu-ray so I can watch it again.

Yep, the ending just did not work well with the overall tone of this film. It should not have gone in that direction.

Me too, though the first time I watched House of the Devil, I thought the last 10mins or so seemed a bit 'off' from the rest of the movie. But after a second viewing, the ending didn't bother me as much.

The Innkeepers I enjoyed, but the ending..yeah, I have issues with it also. Some things just don't make sense or maybe I missed something.
[Show spoiler]At the end her co-worker says he was banging on the door and she called his name. I assume he meant the door that she had previously chained/locked up since I thought the now deceased guest was at the door she bolted. But I don't recall any banging on the door or hearing him yell back to her, etc.

Saw this at the Cable Car in Providence this weekend. I walked out of the theatre very certain I had seen a film with an incredibly solid first 90%, with very likeable characters, a great setting, and a classic setup with just enough of a unique twist. However, I was initially unsure about my feelings towards the resolution. After discussing it with my friend on the way home, I realized that I actually really liked the ending a lot. If you think back to the beginning of the film and the progression of the story, the conclusion is gradually set up along the way and makes sense with the story being told. The more I think about it, the more chilling the implications of the ending are.

The Innkeepers is definitely for horror fans that love atmosphere and characters over gore and 21st century style jump scares (although there are some of those moments in there as well).

As a resident of Connecticut, I think I will have to plan a "Ti West day" of driving to the Yankee Pedlar as well as the pizza place and house from The House of the Devil.

I got the warning to not go in the basement and the chaining/locking the door. Basically, I would have liked the ending fine if it wasn't for the bit with Luke saying he tried to open the door but wasn't strong enough and he heard her call his name. My guess is that I either missed her call out his name and didn't hear him trying to open the door, or it wasn't something the audience was shown or heard.

Something else that made me wonder is the significance of him showing the inhaler at the end. I would of figured she died from fright. But wonder if we're to believe she died from an asthma attack instead? ..which could be another way to go if you say she never saw the ghosts and just got herself worked up into believing she saw them.

According to Amazon, this movie will be released on April 24, 2012. Too far away if you ask me.
