sure there's no perfect translations but you lose a lot more staring at the subtitles the whole film

Its a tough call, because "acting" is reacting, and at least when we read subtitles we hear the actual actors work.

When there's a English overdub, most find it... cheesy. Its no longer the actor we're paying to see and hear. We end up listening to some guy/girl in a studio that's literally reading lines off a sheet and who is not at all in the moment.

Crouching Tiger and Hero did quite well with subtitles while playing in its original language.

As a matter of fact, many feel that when we try the English audio dub option on our Blu-ray (for movies like Hero or Crouching Tiger...etc), they end up sounding like a quiffy 80's/90's Jackie Chan movie (because his old films used audio dubs).

Also, most here are film enthusiasts who want films as they originally were presented. We dont even like the color tint or aspect ratio changed... so there's no way people here would prefer an English audio overdub to its original language track with subtitles.

You know what I just checked out: The English Dub for Crouching Tiger... and you know what they did for that English Dub? They used English words that closeley resemble the lip movements of the Chinese actors so it looks decent. So at least they're not AS CHEESY as a Jackie Chan overdubbed film from the 80's. Of course by doing this, I wonder how much the story vibe changes?

But, that said: if one listens to the English dub on Crouching tiger, one isnt listening to Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Chow Yun Fats' acting.

Most of those Jackie Chan films from Hong Kong in the 1980s and early 1990s were dubbed... even in their "original" Chinese languages. The Hong Kong filmmakers hardly ever recorded audio while filming. They would typically record the audio tracks after the fact. Sometimes, with different actors.

The Legend of Drunken Master (a.k.a. Drunken Master II) is often considered Jackie Chan's best film. The film's Chinese-language track did not even have Jackie's own voice in it, nor the voices of any of the film's original actors. Ironically, the only version that featured Jackie Chan's own voice is the English version. He dubbed the lines himself, something he didn't do for the Chinese version.

I don't know Mandarin, but the few times I've heard Mandarin dubs, I've been impressed. On my part, I'm familiar with French dubs and Vietnamese dubs on East Asian TV series. All of those dubs are miles better than English dubs.

Of course the original track is always better, but I'm lazy and I often don't want to read. Everything beside English, I'd prefer at least a choice to choose a French dub.

While I understand that for some subtitles are a bit of a pain, I will never watch a movie dub. As a kid nothing I hated most seeing a English movie dub in French. I will always watch a movie in it's original language with subs to the point I would rather import to get the original language then buying here and getting a dub.

I'm split when it comes to dubs. In live action, it's absolutely essential to me that its viewed in its original language. Sure you don't get to watch the action as much, but listening to a dub just feels so inauthentic. On the other hand, I usually prefer it when watching animation. Most of Miyazaki's films have received some really nice dubs, which allow me to focus my attention on the beautiful animation.

Unfortunately not.
Criterion was able to release ITMFL because they got licensed it from Universal. But Sony Pictures Classics is the rights holder for 2046.
As far as I know, Sony releases all of their own titles, except for a few catalogs that they gave to Image. No Criterions that I know of. So we'll have to wait for Sony Pictures Classics to release more of their catalog in the future.

But they're slow. Only more popular films like Run Lola Run get released, and I don't think we'd have The Lives of Others on Blu-ray if it wasn't released during BD's lifetime.
We'll get them eventually. We waited quite a long time for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon... Sony's probably just waiting for something to tie the release into(10th Anniversary next year? The Grandmasters?).

Really,dude?

Sony has licensed a plethora of titles to Criterion already : On the Waterfront,Anatomy of a Murder, Vanya on 42nd Street etc.
Also,they have a licensing deal with Twilight too.
