Default DVD Empire numbers: Looks like HD-DVD is going to win this week... hope not!!

http://www.dvdempire.com/index.asp?u...ite_media_id=0

Dvdempire.com has HD-DVD in the lead for their store this week. This hasn't happened since before the release of PS3 at least to my memory!!!

It's the slimmest of margins though. If they only win by a couple percentage points on their BIGGEST release ever, then they should finally realize they have lost the format 'war'.

There is no way, they are almost 50-50 with a 2% difference and they didn't even have a sale on BLU...if anything that tells me the sales of TF on HD-DUD were less than stellar. Sucked actually.

If anything this confirms that Blu blew them out of the water.

DVD Empire always has HD winning early in the week, Blu late in the week.

I have no idea why this is true, but it always has been.

*EDIT* Basically, I'm not saying TF won't win the week for HD-DVD, I'm saying that it's too early to say it definitively.

to me and apparently everyone else it seems that paramount has made a really dumb move here. Paramount must be really blind or just care about the money, which is sad. to bad they dont buy outta that contract and start making the money they deserve with the great Blu Rays that they could offer

DING DING DING! We have a winner! Only the sleaziest of corporate dogs would make this kind of decision and Paramount is in heat. Still who cares about one week of sales? I mean they do need something to preach and repeat for the next 4 months of PR. This is MS throwing money around nothing more, Paramount knows it's a waste and more then likely saw no reason not to take the money and run, as they know we will buy it when it comes out later. Keep in mind that the deal they made is only good if HD-DVD can last for the time frame they agreed on, and as it's looking I don't know if it will.

Actually, as much as I hate what they did, it was a great business decision. While the HD sales #'s are still low (growing) where it's hard to turn a profit, Paramount gets $150 mil for really doing nothing.

I'm sure, as in any good contract language, that Paramount has an out (say if HD-DVD fails) before their 18 months are up and keep the 150 mil. Even if the "weaker" format survives that long and then folds, Paramount makes out. How..................................?

1. They get $150 for nothing
2. language to protect the $150 mil
3. As many sales to HD-DVD as they can get for 18 months(with possible resale in Blu afterwards)
4. A larger group of Blu buyers (us) that will buy the Paramount titles when they come out in 18 months (15 now) or earlier if HD-DVD folds.
5. After the 18 months they sell to both formats if HD-DVD is still around with a surge it Blu sales

I do big $ deals all the time and their move was a win win for them. As much as I don't like their move, I understand and will buy BD's from them when they return.

Agreed. Besides they was no way they were going to make $150MM net profit from HD sales over the next 18 months anyway. This payment is straight cash with no associated expense. Then later they get the sales anyway as you stated.

I hate the lack of integrity of it, but it makes perfect sense.

Yep, it always skews toward HD-DVD after the weekly Tuesday stat "reset", but by the end of the week it corrects itself.

Plus,

DVDEmpire is sold out of Transformers.

So those numbers are certainly going to shift heavy Blu.

And I hear Circuit City killed the BOGO which if true is also good because too many HD DUD's were getting picked up there.

I think it may be close,.. I can't wait for the reoport though. I so want to throw cold water in the fact of the HD DUD-ers. Why can't they take the hint already? It's over,... sooner or later they will have to realize.

you are absolutelt right about your point, DVD Empire indeed DID NOT have a B1G1F Bluray sale and HDDVD is barely winning by a hair...In a situation like this where no bluray promos are available through DVD Empire HDDVD numbers should have been CRUSHING bluray with the Transformar HDDVD release, but in this case they are BARELY winning...

This will be a good tell tale sign that Bluray might in fact win this week overall when the Nielsen numbers come out next week.

HD DVD only won this week by a little more than 2% and there is not another Transformers size release in the near future we should regain the lead next week or in the first week of October. For those people worried about this just look at the percentage for the year, we are winning the war.

October 30th: Spiderman 3 and the Spider Man High Def Trilogy
December 4th: Pirates of the Caribean: at Worlds End
December 18th: Simpsons Movie
January 8th: The Rock and Con Air ( I don't know how big these will be but I'm getting the Rock

For me December 4th: Pirates of the Caribean: at Worlds End, December 18th: Simpsons Movie, I will probably get both these at Christmas and the Rock will likely be the first purchase for me in '08.

I think this analysis is probably pretty accurate. If things were going to be 70/30 HD-DVD as many feared, then a neutral site w/ no B1G1F sales should have at least that margin. the swaying factor however may be the B&M stores which maybe didn't have many copies out until yesterday or so. Still it seems an HD-DVd blowout win is not forthcoming.

So what it is one website. Wait for Neilsons.

Who cares if HD DVD leads in sales this week? It isn't that big of a deal. Paramount can't release Transformers everyweek.
