Default What's up with Best Buy and Blu-ray?

Hey guys. First time posting here. I just needed to see if you guys are going through the same situation as I am. Don't know if management knows what it's doing or they're just HD-DVD lovers but lately when I go into Best Buy they don't have what I'm looking for. Perfect example, when the new Fantastic 4 came out my first stop was of course Best Buy. I go in there expecting to see a display up front, but I saw nothing. Not one single Blu-Ray disc. I was very apset again. They even have a bigger section of HD in my opinion. So I went to CircuitCity to pick one up. The only Blu-Ray I've picked up at BB is 300 on BR. They did have a front display, but the movie is on for HD-DVD to.

Welcome!
Sometimes new titles do get stuck in transit by a few days.
I couldn't find FF at first either.

At other store I had to look hard for it as it was mixed with others.

really depends where you live. if you ask them to order it for you they for sure will. its usually pretty evenly split between HDDVD and BluRay

Thanks for the info. They're alot of retail stores in my area. I don't like going to CircuitCity but they have more of a selection of BRs than any place over here. The target stores have 9 to 12 titles for BR and HD. One of the Wal-marts over here has maybe 15 BR and 10 HD. The other Wal-Mart has 0 on both formats. Other retail stores are about the same except. BB and CC. There is a MovieStop that just opened up. I think I'll check that place out.

Try contacting the home office. Sometimes it is shipping delays, other times they simply don't get it on the shelf fast enough. Varies from store to store.

But you never know if a some HD DVD loving manager is intentially sabotaging blu-ray, or even getting paid for his efforts! Again, e-mail the home office and complain.

Exactly!
When Weeds S2 came out, the BBuy by me hadn't put out anything new from that week on any format(BD, HDDVD or DVD), but when I asked a rep, he went and found it in a box in back while another rep proceeded to tell me it didn't exist.

Best buy will often not put out new stock on the store shelves the same day it arrives. If you ask an employee and get them to check the computer system it's likely they have it in the back. When I go to best buy, I have NEVER found an item on their shelves on release day, but 50% of the time it's in the back and they just have to go get it.

I know many Best Buys got a prepack cardboard display of FF that was like 4-5 rows of DVD and 1 row of BR (vertical rows)

Best Buy at Dundas Square in Toronto is pretty good. They do not always have the Blu-rays on release time though. So, I just go to the huge HMV just down the street on Yonge. It's nice having two massive stores so close to each other.

In LA:
Best Buy 50:50 (better displays for HDDVD)
Target 50:50 (both anemic)
Amoeba Records 50:50 (bizarrely terrible BD selection)
LazerBlazer 50:50 (HUGE selection of both)
Circuit City 100:0 (No HDDVDs, but BD selection is only slightly better than the used leavings of a GameStop)

I've seen no movement in months.

The Best Buy in Sterling is so pathetic on everything that I do not even bother to go there any more to shop. Asking the employees for help is useless, as either they are too busy doing nothing, or the RSS (or whatever it is they use) says they didn't order any.

As far as BR's, I will just order from Amazon and wait for it to show up. On electronics, I'll either try Circuit City, or order online.

Just my 2 cents...

The Best Buy in my area is pretty bad about having the new releases out in the morning. I usually go by when it opens on release day and frequently have to ask for them or look through their boxes. This week was a pleasant surprise though, they had all the releases on time and everything was on the shelf already.

When Fantastic Four 2 was released, they had all the huge displays for it but only stocked with DVDs when they opened. Later in the day, they had added blu-rays to the display.

Until this week, my Best Buy was 50/50 (2 sections of blu-ray, 2 sections of HD DVD) but now they have 6 sections of blu-ray (7 if you count the rack that sits in the middle of an aisle) and 3 sections of HD DVD. I was pretty shocked to see that. The best part is that all the blu-ray cases were facing the customer so browsing the selection was really easy. I doubt they'll be able to keep it that way as the number of blu-rays grow but I'm really enjoying that for the time being.

I spoke too soon! Target went from half a rack of each format, to 1.5 Blu and .5 HD-DVD. From 50/50 to 75/25!! Not bad. The BD selection improved as well! And as for Best Buy... Used to be 1 rack per format... now 2.5 racks for Blu, 1 for HDDVD. Plus, BD is now more prominently displayed! Things are looking up in the movie capital of the world.
