Default Blu-ray, HD-DVD, PS3, and LotR

I haven't been into console games since the Nintendo 64. The only DVDs I've ever had much interest to purchase are The Lord of the Rings. So I'm not one that has spent lots of money in these arenas.

Yet, I am practically rabid to purchase a PS3 with HD movie capability.

I'd love to own HD versions of LotR on disc, as well as possible SD versions that would fit on one disc. But, I'm not willing to shell out any more than maybe $200 for an HD-DVD player.

If the PS3 didn't have HD capability, I'd likely continue to spend my time away from console gaming. But, throw in HD LotR and I'm ready to spend $600.

I've heard that LotR will likely be released on Blu-ray, but I've not seen anything definitive. It has been advertized to be released on HD-DVD.

I won't purchase a PS3 if I can't watch LotR on it, and I won't purchase an HD-DVD-only unit for more than $200. I want both.

Sony has a huge advantage for someone like me, bundling HD movies with the PS3. I'm one that is hoping Blu-ray will win the HD movie format war. But I need to know LotR will be on Blu-ray before I buy.

FWIW, The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is owned by New Line which is distributed by Warner which is supporting both formats. HD DVD may get this trilogy first but Warner has stated that all of their HD DVD titles will also be released on BD. Although they said it may take a year for their BD releases to catch up to their HD DVD line. So basically if you want to spend $200 then waiting is the best thing. Eventually you should be able to buy TLOTR on either format along with a Blu-ray or HD DVD player for under $200. How much patience do you have though? The competition of these formats will bring prices down quicker than if there were only one but it's still going to take some time to get to that price range.

I sure would like to see LOTR trilogy on Blu Ray. These are some of the Best Movies of all time IMO, and they suffered dearly in PQ on DVD from a lack of space. They looked great on TNTHD & WBHD when i saw them, and I can only imagine with DL 50gb and a cranked up bitrate how these could shine!.

I too anticipate the LOTR flicks...and don't worry they'll come!

I've never seen any of the LOTR movies because the first one bored the hell out of me, but I'll watch pretty much anything in HD, so I look forward to adding these movies to the BD collection.

I actually didn't like the first 45 minutes of Fellowship Of The Ring but from that point on the series got really entertaining. These movies are a visual feast and will surely be a treat in high def.

Exactly! I learned this the hard way in efforts to author my own DVD to put the whole trilogy on one disc in one continuous movie. The data is compressed to the point of breaking, especially the latter two movies. Any more compression makes it look like crap!

Speaking of lack of space, how exactly are they now fitting the entire theatrical and extended editions on one disc per episode in the new upcoming DVD release? I suppose they're dropping the redundant data, but that's still at least a 1.5 to 1 reduction. Better compression method I suppose...

I recorded the first two episodes on TNTHD. I didn't watch them much, but one thing I did notice is the patterns on the elven cloaks. There are so many details like that that are lost at DVD resolution.

it would be something more along the lines of secreting a brown excrement, putting it in a paper bag, lighting it on fire, and putting it on the neighbors porch.

granted, this is based on the fact that it would look bad
