Close Encounters price drop - Blu-ray Forum

This is my first new thread. (Hope I'm doing this right.)

Close Encounters has dropped $2 on amazon this morning to $32.95. I was not aware until now that it will contain all three versions of the movie. So, something that didn't seem like much of a bargain IS actually a bargain. (I've likely had all three versions at some point in laserdisc and DVD, but I just pre-ordered it.) There was a time, when this and Star Wars debuted, that I preferred Close Encounters to Star Wars. (I know that's a kind of blasphemy.)

I always hated the version of CE when they took out the sequence where Roy tosses debrise into their kitchen through the window, prepartory to his building Devil's Tower in the family room. That was certainly motivation enough for his (any) wife to take the kids and flee. Also, toward the beginning of the movie, when he shows up at work and volunteers to track down the source of the electrical outage, but then he heads off and chases down the UFO's and soon gets fired, again, the primary motivation for his firing was removed when that sequence was taken out; unfortunately, this significant scene was still not restored in the "final" version of the film on SD.

Thanks for the heads up. I've meant to pre-order and just hadn't yet, but I'm locked in now.

Funny that Lucas thought more folks would feel the way you did about CE vis-a-vis Star Wars---something I didn't know until reading about the Spielberg/Lucas percentages trade elsewhere on this forum. I never cared for CE much myself until I was in my 20s and the film had been out for a decade, but I'm really looking forward to this release.

Certainly one of Stevie's best. I was blown away by it when I first saw it in the theaters back in the day ... though Star Wars was still my fave.

Since you said that, when did this movie come out in theatres?

I have actually never watched this movie beginning to end. its a good movie and I like it, but i've never felt compelled to buy it until now. i'm excited I think I will order it.

I never really loved this movie, it was fairly good IMHO, but I am buying it just because it's Blu-ray and it's Spielberg.

I am like you.I myself have never seen it from start to finish on seen pieces of it when it aired on TV.
I have this on order just to see how good an old movie can look in BLU and to sipport the cause.

1978 in the UK! I saw Star Wars and then Close Encounters. Fell in love with movies and movie making...

It's just that all the good classics I like came out before I was born. This is another one that was out before I was.

Kind of funny anecdote: I was 7 at the time of CE's release, and my brother said he was taking me to a movie that night but wouldn't tell what it was except that is started with a "C".

Immediately, in outrage I exclaimed: "It's not Candleshoe, is it?! Arrrgh"
