Default How come the BDA hasnt tried to make a deal with MS?

One thing that has occured to me is that MS has been the main thorn in the side of the BDA. It has been speculated that MS is only involved in the format war to move people into downloading.

Then why doesnt the BDA do this:

Tell MS if they dont back off on HD-DVD, then Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM or Lionsgate will not allow their titles to EVER be distributed on xbox live?

Seems like a good idea to me.

On the flip side:

IF they can get MS to back down, why not offer them the ability to sell any of their movies they want on xbox live?

If that happens: MS wins and the BDA wins.

Just a random thought....

Perhaps all of the speculation is wrong.

I don't know the answer though.

The BDA can win this war without the support of Microsoft. Toshiba, however, cannot.

I don't think digital downloads has a realistic business model at this point in time. Toshiba is nothing more than a pawn for MS.

The movie studios are not interested in "gatekeeper" services much longer like iTunes and Live. They want all the money.

MS has no content, and unless they can lock studios in they've got nothing

Thats my point. If the BDA gets MS out of the picture, Toshiba has nobody to bail them out.

No, MS wants to be the ultimate gateway for all future video sales - an Itunes copycat. It wants to kill off physical media eventually. But first, it wants to "legitimise" IHD and VC in the minds of consumers, through HD DVD. For this initial plan, it has been relatively successful (what with so many gullible folks around). What comes next is obvious (at least what they hope for) - HD DVD is disposable.

MS is a software company, but they would do well to shed their dependence on CE hardware makers. To put it another way, I think they are ultimately trying to relegate the power of CE companies, and replace them with their own (preferably software) solutions.

Microsoft would never accept a deal from the BDA for almost any amount of money. Microsoft made a decision to beat both the Wi & the PS3 to market for this console generation. By making that decision they were forced to not include any high def media as integral to their console(HD DVD & BD simply were not ready at the time). Their rush to market is also why the Xbox 360 is maybe the poorest engineered consumer electronics device of all time and RROD frequently. When Sony made the decision that every PS3 would be a blu-ray player and that games would come on BD media, Microsoft suddenly got behind HD DVD in a very strong way. Microsoft's support of the format was only to stall the growth of the high definition media market and prevent BD from becoming the dominant home media format, thus putting the Xbox 360 at a competitive disadvantage to the PS3.

Microsoft wants to kill physical HD media and would love to slow down Blu-ray's eventual victory.

Bill Gates wanted Blu-Ray to allow the ability to download or copy movies to a media server using digital rights management, but the BR consortium refused as they felt it wud increase the chances of piracy. Not only that, the BR group insisted on staying with Sun Microsystems Java instead of Microsoft Java. Since the HD-DVD group allowed for both requests, MS went along with HD-DVD.

Because, in the end of the day, all these companies want to make money. WE care about this format war much more than they do. Take Sony and Toshiba; both are working closely together on PS3 cell production. They are not like us where we sit around on the forum getting stressed at every bit of news. They are obvious interested in promoting their licences but neither camps let it interfere with standard business. So to with Microsoft and studios, the latter will want to use the portal offered by Live to sell to their community.

All that said I suspect Microsoft may buy up a studio or three in the not too distant future.

History shows that Micro$oft is not a good business partner. They either buy out the competition or try to roll them over through monopolistic tactics or spread FUD.

The only valid thing they bring to the table is money. It doesn't appear the BDA is in need of money to bribe studios to support their format. Hence, no need for Micro$oft.

HEHE we still try to extend and invite to them to join the BDA.
They still have not accepted the invite.
They will eventually though when their DUD dies.

Where have you been? Buy Windows Vista Super Duper Ultimate Edition and get 20 free Blu-Ray movies. Buy Office 2009 and get a free Blu-Ray player. Those backstabbers?
