Sweet! I am assuming this will look much nicer than FilmChest's release a couple years ago.

Definitely. It's a new restoration from the 35mm negative done by the Library of Congress

Bonus features:
  • Audio commentary from filmmaker / historian / curator Bret Wood
  • Original Nazi concentration and prison camp footage (both featured in the final film) from filmmaker George Stevens
  • Original Theatrical Trailer

This sounds great.

Fall 2013 is exploding with some strong Blu-ray offerings.

I just picked up the Kansas City Confidential/The Stranger two-pack a few weeks ago.

Eh, so I wound up overpaying a bit for KCC...boo hoo, poor me

Shouldn't be hard to beat the previous release...

But is this actually a new restoration, or just "newly mastered from a 35mm print...". With Kino I'm guessing the latter, it could be great if it's a clean print... but they've released a few blu-rays/DVD's with insane amounts of damage on them. So for me it's sort of "wait and see" at this point, even though these are the types of films I want to support on blu-ray. If I'm spending $20+ it has to be from a good source or else it's not worth it IMO.

It's a restoration. They did the same with Kubrick's Fear and Desire. I wouldn't expect it to be a pristine transfer as they don't seem to tamper much with any de-noising or other digital enhancing like you see from other restoration projects, but I'm banking on a well above average transfer here.

I agree with this - PQ-wise the MGM DVD is the cream of the crop right now. And while I may get this due to the extras, Id like to be able to watch the movie with as good as or better PQ than the DVD. The Film Chest Blu Ray was horrid.

Remember this is the same company that 'blew it' with their Blu Ray of White Zombie and has been doing half -arsed efforts with titles like the Blue Angel and Black Sabbath ( one version, minimal extras)

Reviews for this and Hitch-hiker to me with screen caps are essential for me -I hope DVD Beaver compares the prints for both films...and Devil Bat too!

I'm not sure I like the sound of that. I don't know anything about the movie, nor what the footage shows, but it doesn't show piles of dead bodies or anything, does it? I can't handle real-life imagery like that, no matter how long ago it may have been.

As for the film, should I look into it if I'm looking for great cinematography?

There are very brief glimpses of the concentration camp, most without any people shown in it (like empty chambers). There is a shot that lasts for about 2 seconds that shows piles of bodies though. It's being shown to someone on a film projector so it's not full screen or anything.

This movie isn't known for its cinematography or anything. It's shot in a small town, like Anytown USA and so there's not much opportunity for great cinematography.

You can check out the public domain version for yourself if you'd like. The concentration camp footage happens around 59:30

Thank you very much for the help. I appreciate it I might as well try the public domain version, as long as it really is public domain

Is the 59:30 part the bodies? Or the chambers? Or does it all happen at the same time?

I had the FilmChest version and I ended up shutting it off after 5 minutes due to the crappy quality. I may pick this up down the line.

This is a worthy name for my collection.Great news about the new restoration from the 35mm negative. Earlier blu ray was far from perfect. Kino effort could be a winner ! Thanks
