Go back to the DVD. It looks much better than the blu-ray. See this comparison: link. The blu-ray is taken from inferior source materials and then scrubbed to the point that everyone looks like wax figures.

Now the review on this site said the blu-ray was better than the DVD, so I sold my MGM DVD and grabbed the blu-ray. Oh this blu-ray game

"I haven't seen as many PD DVDs of this title as I have of The Stranger, but this release has a couple of things going for it. It is virtually spot and blemish free, which none of the DVD releases I've seen (including the touted MGM) have, sometime in abundance." - Reviewer

Really good film. It may not be as awesome as 'Lady from Shanghai', but I will still pick this up.

Woman In The Window is still under copyright, and held by MGM. Perhaps it could be a pickup for Twilight Time, considering the success they had with The Big Heat.

I had the FilmChest version and I ended up shutting it off after 5 minutes due to the crappy quality. I may pick this up down the line.

Default The Stranger

This is a worthy name for my collection.Great news about the new restoration from the 35mm negative. Earlier blu ray was far from perfect. Kino effort could be a winner ! Thanks

If you have a Big Lots nearby, I've seen the MGM DVD of The Stranger there for $3.

  • Original Theatrical Trailer
Shouldn't be hard to beat the previous release...

But is this actually a new restoration, or just "newly mastered from a 35mm print...". With Kino I'm guessing the latter, it could be great if it's a clean print... but they've released a few blu-rays/DVD's with insane amounts of damage on them. So for me it's sort of "wait and see" at this point, even though these are the types of films I want to support on blu-ray. If I'm spending $20+ it has to be from a good source or else it's not worth it IMO.

It's a restoration. They did the same with Kubrick's Fear and Desire. I wouldn't expect it to be a pristine transfer as they don't seem to tamper much with any de-noising or other digital enhancing like you see from other restoration projects, but I'm banking on a well above average transfer here.

I agree with this - PQ-wise the MGM DVD is the cream of the crop right now. And while I may get this due to the extras, Id like to be able to watch the movie with as good as or better PQ than the DVD. The Film Chest Blu Ray was horrid.

Remember this is the same company that 'blew it' with their Blu Ray of White Zombie and has been doing half -arsed efforts with titles like the Blue Angel and Black Sabbath ( one version, minimal extras)

Reviews for this and Hitch-hiker to me with screen caps are essential for me -I hope DVD Beaver compares the prints for both films...and Devil Bat too!

I wasn't into Kidnapped / Rabid Dog (wasn't my cup of tea) but yeah that counts as a half-arsed effort too ..so my confidence in Kino has gone down...
Its a shame because they had done some great stuff before, such as Nosferatu ultimate edition, Faust, Old Dark House...
