Default Taking Bets!!! Rat vs. Shrek3...Win Something!!

Ok...The rat is out.

Next week we will see the release of Shrek 3. These two movies will be the epitome of the format war.

Both are big budget family films that did unbelievably well in theaters.

If any of you have posted in Winn's AVS Weekly sales thread, then you know how the guessing will be. We will be guessing total weekly amount...i.e. if Rat moves 100,000 copies vs. Shreks 80,000 copies your guess will be 100:80.
Got it?

Rat vs. Shrek
100:80

Edit!!!!

If anyone gets both guesses right on the money, I will send them a brand new copy of both Rat and Cars on Blu-Ray!!!

Of course they HAVE to buy it. They all already bought Transformers. They got nothing left.

Shrek the 3rd made a brief appearance in the top 100 today, but it dropped out again. You still think it is going to sell that well? Even Close Encounters is doing better on Amazon. Now, we have no idea how well it will do in B&M but my guess is not too well. I can just hear the crying the week after next. "But Shrek 3 must have sold at least 100,000 copies at Wal-Mart!" I don't think it will even hit number one. I think Ratatouille residual sales might still take that spot.

It would be funny if Spider-Man beat out Shrek.

Reasons:
Rat was a FAR more popular movie
Ratatouille (especially the BD version) has been heavily advertised
All Shrek commercials ive seen fail to mention HDDVD

and Lastly, there are simply far more bluray players out there.

Its not even going to be close

Because of the strength of the franchise, Shrek3 did better in the boxoffice. However, Ratatouille was a surprisingly good movie, unexpected, and probably not known by many. Don't know how a Rat II will do, but the novelty will likely be gone in the sequel, the same way Shrek II shouldn't have been made.

I don't know which will do better. If re-sequels actually don't do as well as we expect, then Rat has a better chance.

But throughout Nov. & Dec. the rat will pull ahead by a much wider margin. We're getting into the "Christmas gift" time where these movies might be placed on lists for parents to pick up whenever. Just my guess.

Yeah, this sounds better!
I completely agree. Ratatouille will beat shrek initially, but later on the gap will only widen.

2 to 1.

The Shrek franchise has lost a lot of steam.
The Rat movie is hot, hot news.

going off recent sales. if transformers did 113k, then shrek will do around 75k IMO. If Spiderman + box trilogy box set did around 175k then id say rat does 200k. yes, i think rat will beat spiderman. it appeals to a broader audience and was better advertised.

I think some of you are being WAY too generous. Shrek the 3rd comes out next week, that is just a few days away and it hasn't even moved into the top 100 Amazon listings. Yes, yes I know Amazon's sales aren't everything, but it does show trends and the trend is that HD DVD owners don't seem to care too much for it. Look, the DVD is at number two, even Knocked Up was in the top 100 by then. How high did that go? I am not saying it won't make it into the top 100, but I am saying people are just staying away from this movie. But then you also might have to figure that the HD DVD fanboys might buy it just because it is an HD DVD and don't want to let a little old rat show them up. But I bet Ratatouille does 200,000 copies on BD Shrek maybe 35,000. Am I crazy?

I've noticed that too, it either fails to mention HD-DVD entirely, or it shows the HD-DVD, but the announcer never audibly says "HD-DVD".

I think this is true also for other HD-DVD films like "Chuck and Larry". Never an audio mention of HD-DVD. Contrast this to Blu-Ray films, where the advertisement always specifically and audibly says "Blu-Ray" at least once.

It had me scratching my head, but it's good news if advertisers start overlooking the HD-DVD side.

Why wouldn't they mention it?
Hummm

Wouldn't it be great if they tried to sabotage their own sales to take advantage of an out clause in their exclusive contract.

Ratatouille will easily beat shrek 3. It's just a better movie; I'm thinking 120,000 for Ratatouille to 70,000 for shrek 3.

Since Ratatouille is an original show that Pixar has released, I think it is far more likely to sell better than a sequel of a sequel of a movie by Dreamworks.
Honestly, Pixar has had many more successes than Dreamworks, so they already have a leg up there too.

I also vouch for Rat, not as a Blu supporter. I have seen both in the theaters and Shrek 3 was simply boring. All the charm of the original Shrek has gone, the idea outlived itself. I surely hope they are not planning Shrek 4 and 5, do they?
