Default Help me out ladies and gents...

I'll be finishing my basement over the next 3 - 5 months, and I need input on my home theatre set-up for the family. Seating distance is about 15 feet. My blu-ray is a PS3 60GB. Here are my 4 concerns:

1. 1080p/24 a must
2. Movement must be smooth
3. High contrast ratios
4. Min. 45" screen

Now let's assume 3 budgets and see what you recommend. I love the Pioneer plasmas, but wow are they pricey. Sony's XBRs seem size and energy efficient but I am worried about motion artifacts, judder, etc...
Go ahead and include sound systems if you like. Any input is appreciated.

Budget 1: 2-3K
Budget 2: 3-4K
Budget 3: 5-6K

edit: Budget 3...posted as a "5". Sorry for the confusion.

i love my tv's
my loft upstairs has a 61" samsung DLP (11' away) = budget 1
my main floor tv is a 73" mitsubishi DLP (15' away) = budget 2
my basment is gonna be a projector (sony or mitsu) mounted from the ceiling on a 110" steward screen about (18' to 20' away) with 2 rows of theatre seats = budget 5

i like big screens at least 60'' of bigger and lcd or plasma is too much money, i do have 2 42'' plasmas one for the bedroom and one for the gym, granted they look killer, i'm still happy with the dlp's

ive got one for your budget #74, i'll get if i win the lottery price has dropped 5k already

Well Well Well, you must make a very good income to have that many HDTVs. So, what's your occupation? Maybe I'll try that one

At 15 feet I think you need minimum 60" (preferably 70"), so LCDs are out. You said yourself, Pioneer plasmas will fit your bill nicely with 72Hz support but 60" is about 8k.

I don't know much about rear projectors, they are big and cheap, do any of them refresh at a multiple of 24? I think 96Hz front projectors can be had at your price range but again I'm not a projector type guy so I don't know much.

enjoy

The problem is to "future proof" whatever you buy so you are not replacing anything in a couple of years. This is difficult with a small budget, so "buy cheap" on some items you can replace later, and buy the good stuff you don't want to replace any time soom.
Consider a closer viewing distance if you can. 8-10 feet works well with a 52" TV, but 1080P is a waste unless you go to a 60" or better. There are some great buys on Sony SXRD and JVC HD-ILA rear projector sets, both 720 anfd1080. These use the Lcos technology which produces a great picture.
BEST BUY runs regular promotions for Yamaha/Klipsch receiver/speaker packages, with a subwoofer as a low cost extra. Just be sure to get HDMI 1,3 for "future proofing".
Dont forget to budget for cables, preferably all HDMI for interconnects. Try COBALTCABLE.COM for great cables at fair prices with no tax and free shipping.
Good Luck!

Front Projector

Sony VPL-VW60 $5k, you can get in online for $3.5K. A screen (90") is about $600

'Full HD 1080p, 35,000:1 contrast ratio (with Advanced Iris), BRAVIA Engine™, SXRD chip, 12-bit Panel Drive Full Digital Chassis, ARC-F Lens, Real Color Processing, Anamorphic Zoom mode, 200W Ultra High Pressure Lamp, 1080/24p input capable'

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665192796

You need something at lease 70" for that viewing distance.

If 24p is a must the only option is pioneer or pioneer elite if you want a panel.

The top of the line Pioneer Elite Kuro (60", 1080p) is just about in your price range (street price, not list!), so that'd be my first choice. As others have suggested, a projector might be you best way. (Alas, in my house, I think a projector will be out of the question, so panel TV it'll be...)

Even at budget 3, that's up to 6K. So you can't get a flat panel display for 60" at that price. Consider a front projector - Sony, Panasonic and JVC make great stuff.

Since it is the basement anyway, front projector is a good option. Plus it can feel like a real cinema if you go with the wall to wall screen.

Any input on the Sharp Aquos line? The 120 Hz looks inviting but it looks like 24p is out which has me worried about judder, MA, etc...Wall-to-wall looks to be about 15 ft. so it probably will end up being about 12' distance. A 60" Kuro sounds nice, but now I am intrigued with front projectors...off to research them I go!

PS...Now how to convince the wife I need a Pioneer elite 60"...

You can't go wrong with a Pioneer Kuro-- just a spectacular picture, although pricey as others have stated.

If you are looking at front projectors, in addition to the Sony Pearl, Black Pearl, or Ruby, you should also look at the JVC DLA-RS1 or HD1 (same unit, different colors). You could probably find one for a little over 4k (check Audiogon.com). Not as sexy looking as the Sony's, but great bang for the buck. The picture has been described as a tad oversaturated, but it is sharper than the Sony's and light output is very good. It will do 1080p/96 (automatically quadruples the framerate of 1080p/24).
