Default 'Gambit' - An X-Men Spinoff; Channing Tatum to Star

Quote:
X-Men Producer Lauren Shuler Donner On A Channing Tatum Gambit Movie

From recent interviews and press conferences, it's clear that Channing Tatum is a big X-Men fan. In particular, he loves Gambit, the charming Cajun card-thrower who starred in the comics, the '90s animated TV series and, unfortunately, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was mangled by a throwaway role for Taylor Kitsch. Now, in our new X-Men: Days Of Future Past issue, we learned from X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner that a Tatum-led Gambit movie may be closer than you'd think.

"I'm dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum," Shuler Donner reveals. "That doesn't have to be a great big movie. It's a thief in New Orleans, it's a whole different story. He's on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He's such a sweetheart."

At a White House Down press conference last year, Tatum said, “I would like to play Gambit. Gambit’s my favourite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real."

"No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, ’cause I actually like his Gambit, but I’ve always lived around Cajun people. Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking guy. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He’s a thief. He kind of rode the line.”

So it sounds like the star and studio are thinking along the same lines, so all they have to do is make schedules line-up for the in-demand Tatum (also working on 22 Jump Street right now, and appearing later this year in Jupiter Ascending and Foxcatcher) and find the script and director to bring it all together. No problem! It's also interesting to see Shuler-Donner, and Fox, plan smaller X-outings between the major X-Men films.

You can find out much more about X-Men: Days Of Future Past (and, for that matter, 22 Jump Street) in the new issue of Empire, out today. It's basically just stalled out. I don't think it'll happen before 'X-Force', to be honest.

As for this, I'm for it. Honestly, I like Tatum. So I look forward to seeing him get a shot at it. If he can get the accent down, I think he'd actually make a killer Gambit.

Gambit is OK as part of the X-Men team, but as a stand-alone character he's like Wolverine without personality and interesting past.

A Gambit movie *could* be good, but the idea of it sure as heck doesn't excite me in the slightest.

Wake me up when they announce a X-Men: Beast standalone movie.

Would be more interesting. Especially if they explore how Kelsey Grammar's Beast became Secretary of Mutant Affairs in what was clearly a heavily anti-mutant charged world. And his relationship to the President.

Or hell.... have Marvel Studios announce they can use the character too and give us an Avengers Two movie with Beast and Wonder Man. Which would probably be more wild fun and crazy adventure themed.

Really looking forward to a Gambit movie. Tatum seems like the right choice. Can't wait to see what they do with this.

I'm in! Big fan of Tatum. He seems to fit the role quite nicely too!

Hopefully this happens sooner rather than later, just in time for Apocalypse possibly where he could cameo maybe?

I disagree entirely, I HATE Wolverine and think he is not only the most overrated character but totally uninteresting, he is a drunken fool with a temper and a twisted past because he was experimented on, not interesting at all just sad really. Gambit was a person who lived on the streets, lived a life of crime and was redeemed by joining the X-Men, sure Wolverine was as lost as Gambit but Gambit was likeable from the start Wolverine you hate him and he just sort of stick around long enough you get used to him.

My favorite X-men have always been Scott and Jean, they had their own comics I would love for them to get their own movies those are characters I can enjoy. Not everyone has to be the damn bad guy turned good sometimes the inner struggle of a lone good person in a world gone bad is just as interesting because its really hard to stay the course when everyone else is falling apart. I also like Cyclops far more as a front man to the X-men and Wolverine and I pretty much stopped reading once Logan basically took center stage.

I hate him. He's been several dozen movies and hasn't acted yet.

I wouldn't mind this. i think in a interview while promoting White House Down a interviewer asked him who he like to play in a superhero movie and oddly enough he said Gambit.

I like Tatum, but I don't care for this casting. But if he is passionate about playing it, then more power to him.

This could be okay. He's not a great actor but he's got some charisma so surrounded by special effects he should do fine.

Agreed...great show, great acting...sad that he probably wouldn't though. He actually was my first choice...but I think he'd turned down the role but that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Tatum is an A-Lister.

I feel bad for Taylor getting replaced, but I can't blame the studio for replacing him since he's box office poison.

I've been waiting for a Gambit movie and to see them cast that TOOL is extremely disappointing. Guy can't act his way out of a paper bag. Should have stuck with Taylor Kitsch. **** you Hollywood.

So after almost 15 years of X-Men they finally give Gambit some credit. (I don't count the appearance in Origins). Does anyone know the reason why he eluded all the standard X-Men films all this time? Was there some kind of licensing problem or something...to this day I can't work out why he wasn't a part of the franchise considering how big a part he played in the comics and cartoons...besides that, he's one of the coolest X-Men also...

Not sure about Tatum. He's got the charm/charisma and popularity which might see him through...who knows...gotta wait and see. I'm more interested in why kind of script they will pull out...
