Default Golden Compass

Anyone see the previews yet? Looks like Narnia meets Harry Potter meets LOTR = badass. And it's New Line, which means a Blu release in the future, w00t. Discuss!

The Golden Compass was heralded as the next BIG thing in young adult literature. It didn't take off like Harry, but from the previews of New Line Cinema's trailers and TV advertisements, it appears that it might do better as a movie. I hope to see good things from it.

I guarantee you they've cut all the hard edges out of it. There' a lot of religious and political undertones to the book that would not sit well with middle america.

I was actually pretty bored with the books... not because of the story, just the writing. Looking forward to the movie though.

They have changed all the "church" references to "the magisterium" to make it less offensive. From what I've read though, the story is anti-extremist religion, not anti-religion like some people claim. Personally, I don't really care either way. I'll watch it, and if it's well made and entertaining I'll buy it.

You might want to wait until the movie is out before you decry its intentions. The Narnia books for instance is supposed to be pro-Christian. but I never saw or got that when I read them as a child. Christian groups have been slamming the Harry Potter books and movies as well.

I've read all 3 of the books, and found them (with exception of the first book which is rather tame compared to the other 2) among the most anti-church, anti-religious, and anti-christian literature I have ever come across.

True, as one poster put it, they do offer 'food for thought' and raise some interesting religious and philosophical questions - I just disagree with them. I found myself contemplating how one could rewrite the book and make it a wondeful spiritual allegory. While the first book could easily be toned down to stay from these overtly anti-christian/church/religious themes, I don't see how the other books possbily could.

It's hard to tone down when one of the main characters sole purpose in life is to bring down the Kingdom of Heaven. Not the church, or oppressive government - he wants to bring down, abolish, do away with God and the kingdom of Heaven.

Yikes, sounds like someone had a bad experience in Sunday School.

The only real problem I have with the movie is that they are gearing it towards kids. Probably to capitalize on the success of Narnia, HP, and the like. If it was geared towards adults, that wouldn't be so bad. After all, many adults enjoy tackling difficult issues or challenging themselves with ideas contrary to their belief. But a lot of parents are going to stumble into the theater expecting a light-hearted adventure tale about kids.

And, boy, are they going to be surprised.

That assumes that the movie is going to be like the books.

There are many Christian schools of thought, and there are many ways to interpret the actual actions of Lord Asriel, who is trying to cast down a usurper god who is falsely proclaiming himself to be the Authority. On many levels, Pullman's writing is about abolishing the false authorities, be they on the political, religious, or metaphysical level. I find the books challenging, extremely interesting, and in no way demeaning to my own spirituality.

Anyway, this is not a forum for religious discussions, and I won't delve more deeply into the subject matter. I guess we can talk about armored polar bears for a change!

I haven't read the books but I think the movie looks like it's going to be alot of fun. This whole issue of it attacking Christianity may have been the intent of the author to state his views, but its still a book. Does it actually use the names Jesus and God? If you want to see some sort of message in a book or story that is what you will see. I think that some people like to think that this sort of stuff is bad for kids but what is going to have more of an effect on your kids, your teachings or a 2-3 hour movie? It's a little bit ridiculous to think that you need to worry about your kids continuing to believe in their religion because of a fantasy movie. Besides is there really anything wrong with them questioning what they've been told is truth? I mean shouldn't we be creating people who can decide what is right and wrong for themselves and not people who just accept what their told? If you do take your kids to this and they do ask you questions after the movie, which I think will be unlikely to happen, but on the off chance that they do, you should be proud that your kid is that smart to catch a deeper message to the story and is questioning you about it and thinking about what they believe.

What's the rating? The ads didn't look like something I would be taking my young ones to anyway.

We always encourage our kids to do the same..there's nothing special about adults in that regard. If you wait until they are older they will be less likely to challenge themselves and ideas .. since that's what they have been taught as their brains were being wired together...during their childhood.
