Default New Stringer quotes on PS3 sales: much better

"It's the breakthrough we've been anticipating," Stringer said. "We've been holding our breath."

Great news. Let's hope the momentum continues. Getting a solid install base of PS3 (with a bundled Blu-ray movie) will be key. I'm sure once people watch one blu-ray movie, they'll be encouraged to buy more.

I didn't realize that the PS3 was that far behind the other consoles for 2007.
This will help Sony catch up now that the Wii is pretty much done for the year.

On the Blu front, this is obvious good news.

The Wii is far from done. I work at Target, and it's as popular as if it just came out. Every day I get asked, "Do you have any Nintendo Wii's?" I probably get asked 5-6 times per day. Nintendo doesn't even know if they can meet the demand for the holidays.

The good news, however, is that Wii owners have the lowest attach rate of any of the three major systems. Every person I've seen buy the Wii has bought it on impulse, and most likely they just play Wii Sports or one of the Mario games. It's actually funny; people will buy something that's $250 on impulse, but they take a look at the PS3, and say "that's too expensive."

Someone needs to raid AVS and dump that song into every HD-DUD thread.

Thanks for that article, good read, this looks like something that will be a little more difficult for the red side to spin. (Though they will find a way.)

The 40GB PS3 shouldn't cost $800-$850 to manufacture. I am definitely assuming those prices are for the high end 60/80 GB models. The 40GB was internally redesigned from the launch versions. Smaller chip with lower resource consumption, hence a different board. No media card functionality, 2 USB rather than 4 USB, still the cheap-as-dirt wireless card, no backwards-compatibility functionality, and obviously a slightly cheaper hard drive.

Sony is still likely taking a several hundred dollar loss on each console, but I think $399 is the "dive-in" price for many of the previously reluctant buyers. I know at least 5 people off the top of my head that are ready to buy-in at the $399 price. With 6 free movies, and the best of the PS3 exclusives coming in '08, sales should definitely be ten-fold better than 2007.

My main interest, as one of the "Blu-Ray > Gaming" PS3 owners, is that Blu-Ray sales get a big boost. People are most likely buying into it for games, and at $60, movies @ MSRP $30 will be on the back burner.

On a different note, I still see 360's selling like hotcakes
