The 40GB PS3 shouldn't cost $800-$850 to manufacture. I am definitely assuming those prices are for the high end 60/80 GB models. The 40GB was internally redesigned from the launch versions. Smaller chip with lower resource consumption, hence a different board. No media card functionality, 2 USB rather than 4 USB, still the cheap-as-dirt wireless card, no backwards-compatibility functionality, and obviously a slightly cheaper hard drive.
Sony is still likely taking a several hundred dollar loss on each console, but I think $399 is the "dive-in" price for many of the previously reluctant buyers. I know at least 5 people off the top of my head that are ready to buy-in at the $399 price. With 6 free movies, and the best of the PS3 exclusives coming in '08, sales should definitely be ten-fold better than 2007. My main interest, as one of the "Blu-Ray > Gaming" PS3 owners, is that Blu-Ray sales get a big boost. People are most likely buying into it for games, and at $60, movies @ MSRP $30 will be on the back burner. On a different note, I still see 360's selling like hotcakes ![]() |

^Odd. Amazon has the PS3 as the 3rd highest seller in the video games market, which includes consoles, accessories, and games. The Xbox 360 is ranked 16th.
The wifi card works perfectly in my PS3. Did you enjoy paying an extra $100 to get the goofy antenna that sticks out of the back of the Xbox? Last edited by richard lichtenfelt; 11-21-2007 at 03:28 AM. |

So I just got back from wal-mart, and there was this family who ask for a blu-ray player, the worker there tells them that they don't sell any blu-ray player here.
I walk up to them and said. "What about a ps3? That plays blu-ray." And the guy who work there was like "Really? I had no clue!" So the family bought themselves a ps3 along with a couple BD movies. Pretty funny. ![]() Last edited by Blu-Generation; 11-21-2007 at 04:03 AM. |

Stringer has the amazing ability to start great and then just kill it.
Being so non caring about stand alones will hurt Blu very soon. All Stringer talks about is the PS3 PS3 PS3 which is great and all that they are finally moving some, but I think Stringer needs to get the memo that blu ray does not exist just to carry the PS3. Install base in home is a nice catch phrase but it is no different than HD pulling the attach rate card all of the time. 5 mil PS3s do not mean dirt if they are not buying movies. |

Once we get BD stand alones in the $299 ball park that decode advanced audio, stream advanced audio over HDMI 1.3, offer full 1.1 PIP features as well as 2.0 ethernet/web connectivity... then it will be time to brag about stand-alones. Until then, the PS3 still offeres the widest range of features at the lowest cost. And I think Stringer's specifically talking about the PS3 in the context of a Trojan-horse success story: if even a small percentage of PS3 gamers get into Blu-ray because they can watch those discs on their PS3 game console, that's a wind-fall success for BD over HD DVD sales. Microsoft mentioned that only about 1 percent of 360 owners have purchased the add-on for HD DVD movie watching. Yet that small percentage of add-on sales far surpasses Toshiba's stand-alone hardware sales! With the PS3 it's even easier... the gamers get the "add on" already built-in. So it makes it even more likely that they'll test-drive some BD movies just to see what all the fuss is about, and then get hooked. Last edited by DaViD Boulet; 11-21-2007 at 04:03 PM. |
