USA Witness for the Prosecution (1957) Blu-ray from Kino!

Witness for the Prosecution Blu-ray

Quote:
Screen legends Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton star in this "brilliantly made courtroom drama" (Film Daily) that left audiences reeling from its surprise twists and shocking climax. Directed by Billy Wilder, scripted by Wilder and Harry Kurnitz, and based on Agatha Christie's hit London play, this splendid, one-of-a-kind classic "crackles with emotional electricity" (The New York Times) and continues to keep movie lovers riveted until the final, mesmerizing frame. When a wealthy widow is found murdered, her married suitor, Leonard Vole (Power), is accused of the crime. Vole's only hope for acquittal is the testimony of his wife (Dietrich)... but his airtight alibi shatters when she reveals some shocking secrets of her own! Nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Actor (Laughton) and Supporting Actress (Elsa Lanchester).
[Show spoiler]Holy crap! This is unexpected. According to MisterLime, ex-Olive Films' insider.

"Billy Wilder's Witness for the Prosecution starring screen legends Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich, and Charles Laughton and Delbert Mann's Oscar winning Marty starring Ernest Borgnine are among a very large package of titles slated for release on Blu-ray and DVD in 2014 by Kino Lorber Studio Classics."

"My old contact and good friend at Olive Films left his positions as Olive's head of acquisitions and now is the VP of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber and told me to mention these titles. They will announce the actual release dates for the first batch of releases very soon.

IMDB- 8.5/10 ( 41,412 users ) Top 250 #83

Rotten Tomatoes - 100 % (25 reviews counted)

Cool. How the heck did Kino pull these deals off? Now, only if they'd include subtitles on their discs....

As much as I'd love to get this, no subtitles no sale. Hopefully one of the good UK companies gets it and then I'll import it.

I always use subs, but "no subtitles, no sale" seems a bit harsh for a classic like this, doesn't it? I must've seen this countless times on TV without subs. Don't let it be a deal killer unless you're totally deaf.

I never thought this would make it out given the currently hideous attitude MGM has toward its classics. I'm so happy!

I use them and need them. Like Olive and the TCM Lady From Shanghai disc, there's absolutely no reason a company shouldn't include subs on every release for the millions of people who require them. A few hundred dollars to have a track made, if it doesn't exist already (and most do) is peanuts compared to the sales they lose by hard of hearing people who can't buy it. It's sad a few of these companies don't think hard of hearing people should be able to watch movies like the rest of the population.

I guess a petition needs to be created so these companies finally "get it."

I agree 100%. They should always be included. As I said, I use them and my mom needs them badly. I was just saying that I'd get something this good anyway.

I'd sign it. I don't need subs myself (touch wood!), but I've always felt that subs, at least in the language of the film and the primary language of the region it's being sold into, should be a required feature under the BD specs, not just an option. It's basic consideration.

You never shut up about subtitles.. how many times to members have to tell you that studios *cant just add them* as others have said there are costs involved with doing that, and as another member said there are contractual agreements. You did the same exact posts in the Lady from Shanghai thread ranting and raving to the point where some people got sick of it and now youre doing it here
<--------------this is what youre starting to sound like in these threads.. youre not helping the discussion ..you are just driving members up the wall with the same topic on every thread you invade.

Awesome news. I, too, wonder how Kino pulled off this deal.

I still have yet to see this film (I recorded it a couple of weeks ago on my DVR), but I admire Billy Wilder's films, so I will definitely pick this up.

Now that they've got a bit of Olive Films in their acquisitions department, any catalog's possible.

Lets Just say this movie is literally jaw-dropping I watched this one on netflix awhile back... its still streaming too for anyone Interested. some of the best acting you will ever see
Billy Wilder, directing Agatha Christie, complicated by a nasty Marlene Dietrich, with Charles Laughton playing the early ancestor of "Rumpole of the Bailey". Just pick your reason to watch.

Wow! Kino Classics is about to kick the door in. They seemed a bit sluggish there for awhile. Not anymore.

This really caught me by surprise. First off, I was sure that TT already snagged this one. Secondly, Kino signing a deal with MGM. Great news all around!

Just finished this. Excellent film!

Easily my favorite courtroom drama next to 12 Angry Men.
