Warner will be releasing a 10th Anniversary edition for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on March 3rd, 2015. It will come with a 32 page "photobook". Not sure if it's a Digibook or something separate.

I recently watched both adaptations back to back recently, and I like them both about the same. They are different enough that I can respect them as unique adaptations with different points of view. I like both Wonka portrayals as well. Think they both fit in their respective films perfectly.

It gets more right in the adaptation than the 1971 film does, and I generally like it more. I especially appreciate that they didn't make the mistake of having Charlie sneak off and break the factory rules like the 1971 film. That always pissed me off that he got away with that while all the other kids get screwed when they mess with things.
That being said, Wilder is what makes the 1971 film work. |

I like the squirrel scene better than the goose scene in the original film, but that's about it. I dislike the rest of the film, and would take those silly oompa loopas with the orange painted faces over a bunch of them with the same exact actor's face done with CGI. In the original story, where they all identical twins?

Which is sad because this is actually a much better film and adaptation than the 1971 version. Roald Dahl actually hated the final version. This film is much closer to the spirit of his book. The reason that film is so beloved is because of Gene Wilder's amazing performance. Other than that, this trounces it in every possible way.

And the Oompa Loompas were fine. The only reason people hate this movie is because of nostalgia. Yes, Wilder is fantastic in it. However, the Oompa Loompas looked horrible. Plus, I don't care for the golden goose room over the squirrel. |

In regards to the comments about the original being a lighthearted musical, have we watched the same film? It was and still is a dark film; darker than the woeful Depp version. Wilder plays Wonka like a maniac much of the time and a mischievous imp at others, the children are portrayed as being in real danger inside the factory, the adults are portrayed as being just as gluttonous & nasty as the children ("It's your husband's life or your case of Wonka bars!"), the psychedelic tunnel scene is terrifying, etc. For a candy bar commercial, it's wild stuff. Burton's film is a silly cartoon wherein Depp does his best Crispin Glover impression (there is no question that Twister from 1989 inspired his performance). It's a garish piece of studio product from a director that lost his "Pure Imagination" long ago. It doesn't really matter how much closer it adhered to the source novel when the execution was so dank and misguided. Different strokes, I guess. |

I never liked this newer version and I really wanted to. With Tim Burton directing, it should've been great but it just felt lifeless. The original had more heart and felt real. This was more like an animated movie with way too much CG. Depp was also too weird and his backstory was awkward.
Whether this is more like the book or not it just doesn't measure up to the charm of the original. |
