Press Release 08/01/2015

Stanley Kramer’s beloved all-star classic comes to the Blu-Ray table for the first time ever.

“GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER”
Limited Edition BLU-RAY Release
Only 3,000 units available at http://www.screenarchives.com & http://www.twilighttimemovies.com
Once they are gone – they are gone!
RELEASE DATE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 11TH, 2015

“A joy to see, an evening of superb entertainment…It will make you laugh and may even make you cry.”
—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

“A most delightfully acted and gracefully entertaining film…Mr. Rose has written a deliciously swift and pithy script, and Mr. Kramer has made it spin brightly in a stylish ambience of social comedy.”
—Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

“An outstanding Stanley Kramer production, superior in almost every imaginable way, which examines its subject matter with perception, depth, insight, humor and feeling.” —Variety

Another classic from producing/directing powerhouse Stanley Kramer, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967) is a dramedy lightly treating the heaviest of subjects: race in America. Here, a crusading liberal couple—gorgeously played by that legendary team, Spencer Tracy (in his last film role) and Katharine Hepburn—find their beliefs tested when their daughter (Hepburn’s real-life niece, Katharine Houghton) arrives home with her new fiancé: a handsome, brilliant African American (the handsome, brilliant Sidney Poitier). Nominated for ten Oscars®, the film won two: Best Actress for Hepburn and Best Original Screenplay for William Rose.

I caught this on TCM last year and if Sony does even half as well as they usually do with Columbia titles this should look spectacular.

It's not eye-candy in the traditional 'sweeping vistas' sense (though it does have a few of those too) but it's very rich visually.

Here's one where Twilight Time was already beaten to the punch by Sony in other territories as opposed to vice-versa. Will probably get my friend in Japan to send me a copy instead.

Very good news. I can't wait to order To Sir, With Love - my favorite of Sidney Poitier's films and one I wanted on Blu-ray for some time. This will make a very nice addition as well though.

Thumbs up

Back in 1968, the theater up on the corner of my Chicago street (Commodore Theater at Irving Pk. Rd. & Albany Ave.) would let you in for one dollar, and you could stay for every screening, so I did for GWCTD.
Likely the first time (10 years old), I realized I was a Spencer Tracy fan.

For unknown reasons, I never bought the VHS, or DVD, so a top-notch TT BD will be great.

Thanks Twilight Time !

Pretty sure all the Sony releases of this in other territories are region free. It's been available for a while (in Germany, for example, it came out June 2013).

The Sony release is among the worst looking releases from Sony that I've seen:

http://www.caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergl...ID=471#auswahl

Still looks better than an average Universal title though.

I see natural shiny old man skin in that cap, not DNR. It could probably look better but the other caps look all right.

I've never ordered a Twilight Time Blu-ray before. How far in advance does the pre-order usually go up?

Currently, about 2-3 weeks in advance. Any info is posted on the first page of this thread as soon as it becomes known:

I want to order the Italian Blu-ray, but the Amazon page is in Italian.

Duh?!?!

Does anyone know how I can switch the page to English?
Also, what is the current price in U.S. currency?

Here is the amazon.it page through Google Translate:

https://translate.google.com/transla...-text=&act=url

Google also has a currency converter, just type "currency converter" and it should be the first result. Right now, 9.89 euros = 11.18 U. S. dollars.

There's an uptick in resolution, but not a demonstrable one unfortunately. I'll pick it up regardless, but judging by the captures, it's very easy to see why so many people I know just don't see the reason to go to Blu-ray. This looks to be one of those cases where I almost agree with them.

It doesn't look like a full 4k restoration effort from Sony and might just well be an older HD transfer that got dusted off.

Even so, there is still added detail in the Blu-ray caps. If Twilight Time's release uses the same Sony master... just import it. It would definitely not be worth the $35... just like Sleepless in Seattle and As Good As it Gets, which were sub par transfers.
