Damn, this looks amazing.

On a side-note, I've completely lost track of when movies come out in the theaters versus on disc, or whatever.

Doesn't this open in theaters in the U.S. next month? Pretty fast.

I wish my website said so. I can't figure anything out any, more. I just wait for BD or Netflix or HBO these days.

This was not good. Not good at all.
I cannot understand how the man behind Videodrome and Dead Ringers made this.

Looking doubtful whether this will play theatrically anywhere near me. Plan on picking this one up.

What is the last movie of his that you do like? Do you only like his body horror movies (ex Naked Lunch and earlier)?

I was very big on History of Violence/Eastern Promises and liked A Dangerous Method a lot more than most people, so I'm guardedly optimistic about this. The trailers looked AWFUL but I heard some very positive reviews from people who are big fans of the likes of Crash (1996) and said this fits right in with his filmography.

New Cronenberg stuff always fascinates me, so I'm excited to check this out eventually.

I like his early stuff Rabid, Shivers etc. But my favourite is Naked Lunch, Dead Ringers, Crash - I consider those three to be his best. Videodrome and Existenz are also up there.

I like History of Violence and even didn't mind Cosmopolis. Eastern Promises and the Sigmund Freud one were just ok.

I just saw it. The CGI fire literally ruins the film. Is Cronenberg blind or something?

The fire is another hallucination - the film is full of them, and there are no remains of the supposedly burnt body while the insane guy who saw it lies catatonic - god knows what was going through his mind.

It’s supposed to be fake guys. Let it go.

It's an interesting scene, and I wondered about this; to my eye, the water in the pool looked darkened after the incident. Bruce Wager explained in an interview I turned up that the artifice of the fire effect was "...mostly budgetary," going on to say it was also fitting for their location of the house set, lending the proceedings an operatic feel.

It's also possible the scene was intended to work both figuratively and literally; self immolation as
[Show spoiler]actual character fate
in the story...and metaphoric statement about the industry culture.

Cronenberg struggled for several years to raise the money to do this challenging film. He had a very hard time getting it financed. This is one of the reasons he cited for announcing he was retired from filmmaking shortly after this film was released. On top of that, the film did very poorly and was poorly released. He cited his frustration and disenchantment with modern Hollywood as being the main reasons to turn to writing only, and abandoning directing. He spoke of Martin Scorsese having trouble financing his challenging "Silence" for many years, and of Cronenberg himself having trouble financing "Maps to the Stars", and other filmmakers who couldn't get financing, anymore. Even very established filmmakers. He was angry that all the modern audience seems to find cinematically palatable these days are comic book movies and the like. He was very angry around that time. Since then, he published his novel, "Consumed", and his wife of decades, who'd worked with him on all of his features from the late 70s onward, has passed away, also. I'm not sure he'll ever direct again, though he's been a little bit more optimistic, lately, talking about possibly directing something for Netflix a while back.

Anyway, no, I don't think that that fire was a dream or fantasy. I think it was a budgetary limitation, sadly. An error.

I have to say that, otherwise, I found the film sorely underrated, and it is pure, vintage Cronenberg. It is uncomfortable and shocking and disturbing.

I really liked it in many ways. But, yes, that fire is poorly done, indeed.

The screenwriter commentary is an excellent listen and the EPK interviews have some good tidbits, like Cronenberg talking about being an atheist.

DVDCompare lists the French and German releases as being 1080i with EPK interviews, but no commentary.

The Canadian release is Region A and has the exact same supplements, it’s the same distributor (Entertainment One) so it’s the same release for Region A. The only difference then is in the packaging, same cover but one is bilingual while the other has ratings logos.

I got my Canadian release off eBay for around $10
