****This is not a bashing thread, this is just my curiosity****
I'm just wondering about those of you who buy all the new releases on Day 1. I come to this site every day because I am a collector of some sort and I love looking at other peoples collections. Most blu's when they come out average about $20 each. I see many of you buying every single new release and then some. What my real question is...how do you react when you see the deals section here at the top where many of the more recent release blus are $9.99 and sometimes less? Do you feel like you could've waited? Or is it basically the thrill of buying the new movies right when they come out? |

If I really want a title in my collection, I'm going to get it the day it comes out. If I hold off and wait on it to drop to $10, then when it does drop, there will probably be other titles that take precedence over that one. Besides, if the title is not something I feel like I need to get on release date, then it's probably not one I would watch multiple times. Also, for those who like slipcovers, your best chance at getting the slipcover is on release date or closer to it.

the question I have for people who buy Blu-ray's on Day 1...do you even watch them the day you receive them?...meaning if you wait then what's the rush to get it on Day 1 when you could get it for cheaper later on when you might actually watch the movie

I pretty much always wait for black Friday, or 50% Fox-Connect sales, 50% Criterion sales, and opportunities like that. Very rarely to I buy anything at normal price. A release date is a relatively arbitrary thing, my hard earned money is not arbitrary. I can wait.
I don't have a "limit" on what I pay for a particular blu-ray. Otherwise I would never buy anything from Twilight Time or Criterion. However I don't like paying full price on things are are known to have inevitable and drastic price drops (I.e. blu-rays going from $25 to $10 to $5 within a year). If I saw something in the theater already, there's no way in hell I'm paying full price again the day it comes out. I will just wait until black Friday. Now if I *didn't* see something on it's theaterical run. I might be a little more inclined to pay more, but usually I still don't. |

More often than not, a new release Blu-ray at Best Buy, Target, or Movie Stop is cheaper during the first few days than it will likely be for several months after that, due to the release date sale prices.
Movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Under the Skin, or Lucy will probably drop in price six months to a year after the release date, but they're still cheaper on the actual release date than they'll be for quite a while. Price point is usually not a main concern of mine when it comes to movies that I'm really excited to see on Blu-ray, although there are a few exceptions. I'll often wait, for example, for a Barnes & Noble 50% sale to buy certain Criterion titles. |

Like this evening for instance, although I would have preferred to wait for a price drop on Dracula Untold, the thought of passing on the sexy exclusive Walmart steelbook and missing out on the opportunity to easily acquire it forced my wallet. |

I'm a bargain hunter, so I don't buy my movies on day 1, unless I'm getting super great discount. Otherwise, I wait until the prices are reduced significantly, or buy them used from local 2nd hand media stores, and online. Approximately 80% of my collection, are used blu-rays and DVDs and I've saved hundreds of dollars. It pays to be a smart shopper.

However there are a few must haves in my collection (new non-limited, no special packaging) that I will buy on day 1. These titles make up perhaps 20-30 total titles, out of nearly 400 I have been purchasing every single year. So maybe 5%.... I'm frugal... but some movies I want... price be hanged. |

If it is something that I really enjoyed and really want, I'll pick it up during release week. Also, when it comes to blind buying movies, I usually won't do it unless I hear from a lot of people that it is really good or if there is an actor and/or actress in it that I really like.

For me it depends on the movie. For instance, Disney and certain collectors/steelbook items I buy day one because they're likely to not move in price and I don't want to miss out on them (unfortunately I'm missing Snow White & Beauty and the Beast). Others, I'm just impatient and want to see. The cost of going to the theatre, assuming you go with someone is going to be at least $20, so I'd rather spend the money and buy it when it comes out. Then there's the ones that I can wait for. For the most part, I try to wait until they're around the $10 mark because it seems like they drop in price fairly quickly compared to in the past.

I only buy movies release day if they look right up my alley for a variety of reasons. It has to be in my favorite genres (80's style action/revenge or space opera style sci-fi/monster movie) or has to have a favorite director/actor in it. For example I blind-bought Lucy on day one because I love Luc Besson movies and it had a sci-fi edge to it. I blind-bought John Wick because the rave reviews it got made it sound like exactly the kind of action film I love.
When I see them cheaper a month or so later I usually don't care, I paid a premium to get them day one and I accepted that a long time ago. Same for catalog releases really. I know I paid more to get Pumpkinhead on day one, but hey it's one of my favorites from my childhood and Lance Henrikssen is badass. In short we know what we're doing and we accept the risks/costs. I've rarely felt burned... only recent blind-buy I regretted was Edge of Darkness and that only cost me $5 in an Amazon sale. |

I used to buy a lot of title right away, but I've mostly stopped doing that. Mostly because I've become a savvier shopper and I tend to go the theater a lot, so in most instances, I've already seen it and can wait a little bit to pick it up on Blu-Ray.
I've also used Columbia House to my advantage in recent years. It's hard to go out and buy a new release for $20 or more when I know I can put together a massive order with them and get new releases for around $10. Still, that only comes around every so often (essentially, when they run $ off sales, or the MC50 code, which is limited use.) I make a fair amount of exceptions, though. If it was something I missed in theaters that I'm dying to see, I'll pay a "premium" to have it on release day. I also splurge on my favorite films of the year. I ordered Gone Girl for release week, for example. It's gone down $4-$5 since then, but I don't really mind. And of course, I make exceptions for exclusives. I like steelbooks, so I don't really think twice about picking one up at Target or the like for ~$20 when they come out. |

Oh, that's a good point. For me it's the opposite, my wife works nights so I barely ever make it to the theater. So a $20 blind-buy instead of a $30 theater trip is actually a money saver, and I own the movie permanently.
