The Interview, although I don't know if that one would qualify as "big" if you take away the Sony Pictures hack story.

What happened with The Interview was not Sony's original strategy, lol. It wasn't an expensive movie, but it'll be a while before Sony makes its money back.

It wasn't expensive by Sony's typical standards but 50 million is still 50 million. It most definitely is not going to recoup costs.

Finally got around to this tonight. I really wanted to like it...and I did! This is no masterful piece of storytelling but it was written well enough I didn't mind when it got bogged down in a bit of exposition. From the get go it was beautiful to look at. The only Wachowski film I ever cared for was Cloud Atlas but with that being said, The Matrix, V, and Speed Racer are all expertly crafted visual affairs and Jupiter is definitely no slouch. The scenes outside of Stinger's house to the very wide backdrops on huge ships against planet horizons, this was top notch cinematography and from what I've seen so far this year, is one of the best looking films to come out. The action scenes were slick and intense and were never too long or too short, and Giacchino's score was a pleasant surprise as well. Redmayne never bothered me either. It was a quirky film to being with and I think he only enhanced how odd it all was. Gotta say I yelled "**** yeah!" during the
[Show spoiler] . That was just awesome. No means the best film ever, but it was a lot of fun. I'd give it a 3/5 or so.

Connection is from an LG bluray player to an Onkyo PR-SC5530 ATMOS preamp over HDMI. As I only have the preamp set for 2.0 output, the stream taken is PCM@48k for stereo rather than the TrueHD 7.1 with ATMOS hints.
The digital level this stream was mastered at might be 16dB too hot compared to reference. The movie starts immediately with dialog and is blasting me out of the couch. I'm set to -23 on my volume [where zero represent a -30dbFS signal of banded pink noise makes 75dB(SPL)] for it to be acceptable. For any *correct* movie, I expect a level of about -5. The scene where the ship lands on Jupiter is heavily distorted. And I mean heavily, at any volume level. The mastering of this blueray (both 2D and 3D) is broken for PCM 2.0 playback. |

That is a pretty quick release window. I'm going to see this Sunday afternoon and despite all the negative reviews I am still looking forward to it. Hopefully there are some good special features on this release since I am sure there were some pretty cool filming techniques used to make the movie.

Saw this yesterday. It wasn't as bad as the critics had made me fear it would be, but I have to say I think Cloud Atlas was a better film. The special effects in this are solid, but what really stood out for me were the outstanding costumes-nearly all of which were devoted to secondary characters. This really is a bit of a mess though, as it blurs Shakespearean family intrigue, space opera, and straight camp at times. It also borrows from some better films like Soylent Green and Brazil. I was never bored, but the stakes never felt that great.
