Default Enderle - "Blu-ray Is Sony's Iraq" - WTH!?

Enderle - "Blu-ray Is Sony's Iraq" - WTH!?

http://www.technewsworld.com/story/Z...eek-60557.html

Quote:
...As expected, HD DVD sold very well and continues to show very good numbers during the holiday buying season. In looking back at the amount of pain this thing has caused Sony, I couldn't help but compare it to the U.S. and Iraq.

Think about it -- if Donald Rumsfeld, then the Secretary of Defense, had gone to George Bush and said, "Hey, we need to invade Iraq and the result will be I'll lose my job, most of the generals and advisers you currently have will resign or lose their jobs, you'll kill more U.S. soldiers than any president in near-term U.S. history, you'll lose Congress to the Democrats, you'll almost assure Hillary Clinton will be your successor, you'll restart the Cold War, you'll devalue the U.S. dollar to the lowest level in recent history, you'll go down in history as probably the dumbest U.S. president ever, and you'll be locked into an incredibly expensive battle you won't either be able to leave or win," you'd have to believe that George would have said no.

And not just no, but "hell no, no way, noppers, negatory, not doing it, get the hell out of my office and don't come back."

Now look at Blu-ray. Since bringing it out, Sony has trashed its PlayStation division, had to downsize a number of top executives including the guy that was credited with creating the PlayStation's success in the first place. The company's financial performance has largely dropped into the toilet and it has had to sell off parts of the company to Toshiba, the company behind the other format. Key studios have abandoned it, some of which have gaming properties that probably now won't go to PlayStation. Sony has nearly assured that whatever country gets the next media format, it won't be Japan and probably will be China, it will be constantly reminded of the Betamax mistake, Nintendo is No. 1 in the gaming segment, and it'll be locked into a battle it can neither win nor exit from. You'd have to believe that the guy making the proposal would be chased by ninjas out of the office and his ending wouldn't have been a good one.

Oh, and one other similarity: If you point out that the Iraq war was brain-dead stupid, you are seen as a terrorist sympathizer; if you point out that Blu-ray was brain-dead stupid, you are portrayed as being on Toshiba or Microsoft's payroll. I still don't get the Microsoft thing, since neither it nor Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) seems to care that much one way or the other now, and both are focused more on downloads. It gives me a lot of empathy for the kid in the Emperor-has-no-clothes Fairy Tale.
This guy has now officially taken his comments too far. This guy is very deserving of the flame he'll be receiving in a few seconds.

Ridiculous. I don't know what else to say. Ridiculous.

I've not once ever called for this, but he needs to be fired.

Unless he writes as a sideline, in which case he needs to stop being published.

He crossed the line.

Ask Marines how they'd feel having the plight of HD-DVD compared side by side with them dying.

Utter moron.

He does this all the time. He is very pro-micro$oft and pro-HD DVD. He is not giving a balance or a fair report and i have already complained on the forums about this guy many times.

I agree. Normally I don't think it is very cool to call for someone's termination, but Enderle in this article, I agree, has seriously crossed a line that makes light of the sacrifice real brave and courageous soldiers give.

Shame on you Enderle. Utter shame.

I just don't even know what to say about that... So I'll quote what comes closest to my thoughts:

No, actually I suspect he is stupid enough to come up with this crap and get nothing in return.
I honestly believe that when this war is over, that there will still be guys around to say how hd-dvd is winning and bla bla bla ...

QFT. Even a paid shill should do better than that. Enderle's employer really needs to rein him in.

Enderle is Enderle's employer. He is so out of touch with the real world (probably bought a lot of coke (not the tasty soft-drink kind) with the money that MS/Toshiba gave him for that) that he probably thinks that this is a valid argument and some people actually agree with him.

The real test is to see what AVS and the HD DVD faithful make of it over there. If they are as disgusted as everyone here then he really has lost it.

Well I just sent an email to customer support telling them that they should fire the ******* who wrote that piece of trash. I dont care if he owns that site or not. He is an idiot and if my email makes his employees laugh at him behind his back it's good enough for me. This guy deserves no respect at all.

You should ask him why he doesn't give a toss, when he sits on the "advisory boards" of Toshiba and Microsoft, but not of the BDA companies

Quote:
Rather than a positive move, Sony's plans for the PSN and interconnected devices will not solve the company's very basic PS3 problem, Enderle said.

"Sony appears to be doing everything they can to avoid the real problem with their product. It is too expensive and it lacks the 'off the couch' experience that the Wii used to expand the market. Given that playing common games across the PSP and PS3, near term, won't be that interesting and anything other than games hasn't been very popular on these things yet, this would seem to make as much sense as working on making new drapes on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg."

As Sony creates its PlayStation Network, the company needs to ensure that it gives consumers a compelling reason to connect, Enderle noted.

"They probably should have done a better job of connecting to their Vaio PC first. But they need to showcase a compelling reason why these devices need to be connected. While connecting to back-end services is the future -- and for movie downloads will likely make the Blu-ray feature obsolete over time -- it still isn't clear what would make connecting the PSP and PS3 together [a desired activity]," he explained.

Enderle is equally pessimistic about Sony's chances of building up the PSN's available offerings to include movies, videos and music to attract users. Nor does he think that Sony will be able to make up any ground lost to Microsoft's Xbox Live.

"If it was anyone but Sony, the answer would be different, but Sony isn't good with working with others, and that is a huge problem with this effort," he pointed out.

In the end, Sony's plans could have the potential to undermine its goal of building up its PS3-related offerings to attract users and sell more consoles because it means the company will have to split its focus, he said.

"It takes their eye off making the PS3 competitive with the Wii," Enderle concluded. "Currently it isn't, and that should be their highest priority. They carry too much cost and lack game content that addresses the Wii opportunity right now, and fixing that should be the No. 1 priority."
