Default Why is Blu-ray referred to as "Sony's format?"

Why do you think everybody calls Blu-ray "Sony's format"? Consider this literature from [I]Wikipedia[I].

1. The "Blu-ray Disc Founder" was founded in May 2002 by nine leading electronic companies: Matsushita, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, Samsung, and Sony.

2. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association, a group of companies representing consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion picture production.

I know Sony is one of the larger companies involved, but there are some larger companies listed above.

ill tell you why, because blu-ray was pushed by ps3, without it blu-ray would have had no hope, and since ps3 is a sony product, everybody identifies blu-ray as a sony product.

Well Sony is one of the main backers.

But I think most call it Sony's format since some people have an irrational hatred of Sony, so they can have a common enemy.

Also conjurers up Betamax when they say it that way. (People forget Floppies when they talk about Sony formats)

Everyone knows Sony, who in the general public knows Matsushita? Also I think its because Sony is the giant, it markets better to put it on the news as Sony vs. Toshiba.

I would be shocked if Sony isn't the most recognizable CE name.

I would wager 99% of the US have no idea that Panasonic is Matsushita. Hell my dad didn't know that Acura was Honda till I made a comment about it last week.

Right, that's my point. Nissan sold cars in the U.S. under the Datsun name for years, although I don't know why. Anyway everyone in the U.S. from jr high up knows Sony. I know Panny and the other companies listed but do the invent technology? Yes they do, but how may in the U.S. know this. IMHO, they are more likely to think come out with products to chase Sony's lead.

Playstation 3.

It wasn't a coincidence when Blu-ray turned around from losing in sales 2:1 to winning it by that same margin after the PS3 was released.

No offense, but I don't think that was the reason. Here's my logic: Start with Betamax versus VHS and look what happened. Betamax was the better format, but VHS won the battle. Why? VHS was cheaper. Now comes along high definition DVDs. HD DVD was first to market (forget the early on problems with both HD DVD and Blu-ray. When Blu-ray got to market, the players were considerably more expensive. If you will recall, the first adopters of the high definition dvd format were HD DVD enthusiasts and they assumed that because Blu-ray/ergo Sony was more expensive, history was going to repeat itself. They obviously erred.

I don't think HD DVD could ever have won the format war simply because of the superior capabilities of Blu-ray. That being said, the success of the PS3 certainly didn't hurt anything did it.

because it suited the purpose of HD DVDphiles.

They can bring up rootkit and so raise Fear in people

They could BS how Sony never won a format (like Beta.... ) while forgetting all the big ones they helped develop (like CD) and so raise Uncertainty of the future of BD

They can say Sony is BD and Sony's plan is PS# and gamers don't watch movies to bring in Doubt.

So in essence it is just to simplify the FUD

Not to mention that there are people that just have a hatred of Sony (mostly gamers that blame the PS3 for the death of DC or that the Xbox did not get to take over our living rooms) anbd by making that connection it is easier to get them on board.

Nissan has been in control of the brand Datsun since it took control of DAT motorcars in 1933. Their was never a manufacturer named Datsun. Nissan just use that name for US cars since it sounded more American.

But either way, back to BD talk
