It's definitely not a new release.
I always posts specs when I have a new Blu-ray, so other people can make their choices easier.

I have the UK version on order.

well seems to have better audio. the HDDVD version was forced to have Dolby Digital Plus so it was actually slightly bigger in size compared to normal DD 5.1. I only got HDDVD after it was dead... and the movies were nearly free. But this one has Master audio so coming from Germany I wouldn't be surprised. it's an upgrade from Mpeg 2 to Mpeg 4

Could anyone comment on the picture quality of this release? Is it the same as all the previous editions and is the picture really as awful as they say?

It's the same. Basically every release worldwide looks the same except the JP version. They look sharper than a DVD and have better color but thats all you can really say.

That JP is contrast boosted to the point of being blown out so it looks brighter but not better in my opinion. It also is vertically squeezed to 1.85 when the other releases are 1.78

It looks better to me:

And if anything, the non-JP releases look more blown-out.

The whites are clipping in the JP release which is why I said blown out. That last shot illustrates that. The other releases have way less contrast. They both look bad. The JP release was OOP for a long time but it looks like they repressed it. I still wouldn't get it since its also 1080i.

The reviews are awful, state it's the same bad transfer as before. Not wasting my $$ on one of these imports, I still have the old Japanese disc which isn't great but is at least better than the US release.

Paramount needs to remaster this for 4K and it's likely just a matter of time before they will. They've done THE HAUNTING already and that wasn't as much of a hit as SLEEPY HOLLOW.

True but lets not hope they wait until next Halloween.

Personally, I'll stick with my copy of the Japanese release (until we get a new scan and master), and THIS pretty much sums the reason(s). To me the worst thing with the German release is the fact that it's cropped, I can't stand it.

I believe another member mentioned that the Japanese release is MBAFF, which seems to be a mix of both interlaced and progressive encoding. When it comes to 1080i and 1080p, I can't tell the difference. They look the same to me, though I'm sure others notice it.

I prefer my Japanese disc as well. The others are too bright and stretched to 1.78. At least both Japanese and German (2020 Paramount release) discs offer lossless audio. The US releases are stuck with lossy Dolby and DTS tracks.

In 3 years the movie will be 25 years old.
They (Paramount) will probably do something for us collectors.
Maybe a Paramount Presents release?

The 20th anniversary digibook was a beautiful disappointment. If not a 4K release, I really don't see Paramount doing anything else with it.

That being said, with The Addams Family getting a 4K release from Paramount in the fall, maybe Sleepy Hollow won't be too far behind for a 2022 release.
