I am very close to buying a complete 7.1 sound system from Onkyo. Currently I buy all my music from iTunes which, until now, was great. As we all know, MP3s (or iTunes M4Ps) do not have near the same sound quality as CDs. I listen to music a lot and, even though I'm buying the sound system for Blu-rays, I want to get the best sound quality out of my music as well. I plugged an ipod into my car recently and the sound quality was 10 times worse than my CDs.

Now I have 2 options, start buying CDs or wait for something better to come along. Does anyone know if anything better is coming? Is there any talk of any new products?

I ask because I don't want to buy a bunch of CDs only to have something better emerge in 2 years. Does anyone know anything about future music formats? Is it still worth it to stock up CDs?

PS: Stealing music is not an option for me.

Well, I don't think CD's are going anywhere, they are the preferred format for music on a physical media. DVD-Audio and SACD both are in niche status with nothing greater coming out. Downloading is becoming the future with music and unfortunately quality is going down so I think your only option are CD's. You could also pick up some titles on DVD-Audio or SACD if you have a player that plays those formats. But other than that, that's it.
