Ok come on lets say it, it really is the best music in the world! Country singer/songwriters are the best storytellers bar none. In my opinion no other music hits you emotionally:- Garth Brooks 'The Dance' one of the most beautiful songs ever written but you try listening to Alan Jacksons 'Where were you when the world stopped turning' without blubbering like a little girl! The list is endless for amazing artists: Dixie Chiecks, Brad Paisley, George Strait, Vince Gill, Reba and on and on and on! The only thing we are missing in the UK is some decent radio and tv channels with 24 hr material, I've never understood why it's been so difficult for Country music to establish recognition here in the UK, when was the last time a country song was in the top40 singles chart, probably the Mavericks or something!

There are many other genre's that tell stories very well.
Irish Folk: Finnegan's Wake 60's Rock: Grateful Dead Just two that are off the top of my head. BTW, I also enjoy country music, but don't really agree that it is the best at story telling. |

You can find great storytelling in many music genres. Also what great storytelling is, is quite subjective...
![]() Imo there are some real gems in "country music" like e.g. Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss or Neko Case to name a few. |

Absolutely agree. New country is awful. My main beef with country (of any era) is that very, very few of the recording artists write their own material. I much prefer someone to write the songs he/she records. I can also do without the unapologetic jingoism.

I am a country boy born and raised on Hank and Cash. That bullshit today from anybody on the radio sure as shit ain't real country. There are many fantastic modern artists who are keeping that outlaw spirit alive and having met quite a few of them personally through their shows, they are honest to god hard working musicians doing whatever they can to keep the spirit of what made true country great, by refusing to sell out to the spoon fed masses who consider Toby Chesney and Faith McGraw great county. Some of those excellent true outlaw's and true country musicians keepin the dream alive, I must recommend:
J.B. Beverley & the Wayward Drifters (Actually have some of their lyrics committed to ink on my forearm) BR549 Hank Williams III(his earlier stuff, now he's way too into drugs and hard partying) Dale Watson Chris Knight Corry Morrow David Allan Coe (Been around forever, but still making great country music) The Derailers Heather Myles Kasey Chambers Joey Allcorn Junior Brown Old Crow Medicine Show Reckless Kelly Scott H. Biram Wayne Hancock Split Lip Rayfield But hey that's just my opinion of the folks in my daily rotation on my stereo. ![]() Quote:
Chris Knight is not the dude from the Brady's, lol. ![]() Last edited by WyldeMan45; 03-02-2010 at 06:28 AM. |

Not generally 'into' country music, but have Johnny Cash and Steve Earle on my iPod. Was also brought up with country tunes and 60's stuff in general, so I have a vague appreciation for some stuff out there; I'm not going to cut myself off from decent tunes because of a 'label'. Having said that I wouldn't describe country as the best music in the world...
To pandys-box; the UK is pretty much a no-mans land when it comes to country music, possibly because of the dominance of pop. I'm pretty sure C&W had a lot more airplay in the 70's and early 80's, or maybe that was just an over exposure (courtesy of my parents record collection.) to Kenny Rogers, Tammy Wynette, Hank Williams etc during my formative years! |

To me, no one writes a better story than my most favorite, country soul singer James Otto that is. This is a song that James wrote that went on to be named the 2009 ACM and CMA Song of the Year.
