Default Tangerine (2015)

I am really looking forward to this movie. It did very well at the festivals. Looks absolutely stunning visually. A great technical achievement, it's all been shot with the I-Phone 5. Use of color seems to come across very good and the HD imagery looks good. Also the use of real transgenders is noteworthy. Makes it even more believable.

If the major selling point of a movie is that it was shot with an iPhone... no thank you.

Actually not really the selling point of the movie as this was done for budgetary reasons. That's just the kind of creativity and thinking of solutions that's hard to find these days in Hollywood. If there was a budget or a studio behind this, this would probally never been made.

Well, turns out I'll be seeing this Saturday night. A few interviews with the director have peaked my interested a bit.

I saw this at a festival recently. For the first 10 minutes or so I was distracted by the thought, "this was shot on an iPhone." But after that I got pulled into the film and forgot about that. The story and characters are well-written, and there's a craft to the filmmaking.

After seeing The Florida Project , Red Rocket, and Anora, I finally got to see Tangerine. And it did not disappoint. What a great achievement in filmmaking. I actually cared about the characters or at least the main four characters and it was really funny.

If you like Sean Baker’s other movies, you have to see this. It’s only 85 minutes and it flies by.

"Stunning video"? Yeah right, this movie looks awful has has the color palette of vomit. Trans people deserve better than Tangerine, without a doubt Sean Baker's worst film.

That's certainly a unique take on it.

BTW, those A/V adjectives from the overview are automatically supplied based on their review ratings. As such, my review of Second Sight's The Blair Witch Project translates to "stunningly beautiful video" even though I'd never use those exact words. However, considering an alternate definition of "stun" is "to astonish or shock someone so that they are temporarily unable to react", perhaps it's not too far off.

Looking at my review here from the theater 10 years ago (wow, has it been that long?), I would have to bump up my opinion of this one quite a bit.

It has become a Christmas favorite I revisit every December. Love it!

I will never understand Sean Baker bashing. It's a wonderful and touching movie, that's impactful and beautiful to look at (considering all the phone shenanigans).
Just get a life and enjoy cinema!
