Elf stones was the first book I actually read for leisure way back when I was 10! I was hooked immediately! Still can't believe this series got a tv show.

Just watched the premiere double episode. I never read the books so I went into this completely blind with no expectations, and curiousity over the fact that it's on MTV of all channels.

Simply put, one of the most surprisingly good shows I've seen in quite some time. Shockingly good really. The production value is very high for a cable TV show. The cinematography is excellent. Some of the dialog is clunky and there is a slight teen angsty feel every so often, but the story feels epic and the pace is pretty strong.

I'm all in for the 10 episode run and can't wait to see how this pays out.

Good news.

Wife and I had no idea this was coming, but we saw an ad in a pre show at the theater and she shook my arm saying "We need to see this!!" (she is a huge LOTR fan).

I am really enjoying this show. Great special effects and non stop action. Every episode seems to get better & better. Hope it gets a 2nd season.

Oh boy...this past episode was just...very bad!
I get that:
1) the show creators are making this show teen/young crowd friendly
2) the show creators need to add material, not in the source material, to fill out the season.

But my goodness, they couldn't add something more in tune with the book? Maybe material from Sword of Shannara in flashback scenes?
I guess this is on me, as I consider the original Shannara trilogy among my most favorite, edging great epics like Lords of the Ring and Wheel of Time.

No surprise that it's DVD only. Would have looked good on BD though.

I cannot believe you asked that question. Blu-ray disks are more expensive than DVDs:
  • Because the cost of replicating equipment is much higher than for DVD, there are far fewer plants which can produce BD-ROM discs (a Sony division holds a large share of the market), so there is less competition
  • To put 50GB on a disc requires far greater tolerances than DVD (the pits are much closer together, and much closer to the surface of the disc), so there are more rejects, which raises costs
  • Most titles ship fewer copies on Blu-ray than DVD (though the balance continues to shift in Blu-ray's favor), so there are lower economies of scale for Blu-ray
  • Authoring Blu-ray Discs costs more than DVD. FullHD is much less forgiving than SD, so more care must be taken in transferring the print (especially for older movies), and viewer expectations are generally higher. Similarly, most titles include lossless audio, which requires more care to be taken in the audio domain. Major releases also often have more ambitious bonus content than is possible on DVD, which costs more to author.

It took five seconds to search for the information through Google.

The DVD only treatment's what they gave to Almost Human (and even then, it's handled by a third party that makes the DVDs "on demand"...), and The Last Kingdom (DVD in US, Blu in UK and other places).

Methinks that it's a telltale sign that if a show doesn't perform to the standards of what the company that bankrolls it expects, then they pursue whatever means cost the least but can recoup some losses.

Finished watching the series last week in two days and enjoyed it. Characters were well played and settings, costumes and creature designs were very fitting.
I didn't know anything about it when I purchased the Blu-ray and was pleasantly surprised that Ivana Baquero was in it and that I barely recognised her until I saw my copy of Pan's Labyrinth.

Interesting they did a blu for your region. NA only seem to be getting DVD.

Note: I went to look up regions and didn't know DVD and Blu regions differed so much. Being NA and Region 1 and A are the same for us.
