The Light Between Oceans (Michael Fassbender / Alicia Vikander)

Last year I read the novel The Light Between Oceans, and I thought it was great. I felt it would work well as a film, and I was happy to learn that Dreamworks picked up the movie rights, and even happier to find out that the casting is amazing, with Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina) as the leads. It's being directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine). Definitely looking forward to this one next year.

Question for you, as you have read the book, does it spend more time focusing on their time together on the island or their time after they return to the mainland with the baby?

Wait, is this not coming out until 2016 now? I've been wanting to see this movie since early Spring.

Considering there's just 10 days left in 2015, I'd say yes . It might not come out until late 2016, if not early 2017. The only release date available is for the UK, and it's January 6th, 2017.

Geez Louise. I forgot how I even heard about it, but it's been on my watchlist on Letterboxd for at least 6 months now. Had no idea the release date was so far away.

I'd say a good 80-90% or so takes place on the island. It's very much just Tom, Isabel and the baby for most of the story.

Wow. I'm all in for anything with Fassbender, Vikander, and directed by Cianfrance. I'm very excited for this.

oh good. the description made it seem like the story was that of when they returned to the mainland, with their time on the island as more of a prologue.

It's a beautifully shot movie with terrific performances. It reminded me a little bit of Room although that's a far superior film. My biggest gripe is the epilogue which felt unnecessary. It doesn't undermine the movie, but I don't think it enhances it either.

Also, Fassbender's courting of Vikander's character is somewhat unorthodox since he basically goes out on one date, writes her a letter, and then they're getting married(not really a spoiler as it's within the first act of the film). This was just after WWI, so I suppose that was common back then, especially on an island with few rival suitors. But it may be offputting to some moviegoers.

I'd give it 4 out of 5(or 3 1/2 out of 4 stars).

Probably any day now if its release date is Friday. It's been screening for weeks(I saw it at the beginning of August), but I imagine there's been an embargo.

It's been a while since I read the book, but I think the courting is a little more extended than that. Like, multiple encounters, and multiple correspondences too.
