Default Roots Blu Ray.

I see the US are getting a release of the brilliant tv series Roots on Blu Ray, does anyone know of any plans for the UK?

I don't know, but aren't Warner Bros typically region free?

I think so, but importing from the US can be expensive.

I wouldn't bet on it with Warners poor catalogue track record over here. More chance of a German release sometime.

Hi everyone this is what is bothering me about the new Blu-ray release, I have read it is 587minutes long. This according to Blu-ray.com. Now according to the Wikipedia the series ran four nights running 90 minutes long and four nights running one hour long that equals 540 minutes

Now what is bothering me is the fact that when this miniseries was released on DVD people complained about missing footage is this new release which states 587 minutes Are they adding in the bonus features running time to that total? Basically what I am worried about is this just a simple reissue of the DVD version? Even if you take what was billed in 1977 as a 12 hour miniseries (12 time 60mins equals 720 mins). granted each hour possibly 10 minutes pet episode have been allocated for commercials leaving roughly 50minutes per hour or a 600 minute running time. I am saying is this is fully restored version of roots complete with no missing footage from 1977? does anyone know ?

The back of the box says that it's presented in it's original 8 episode broadcast version. Quick Calculation shows that it's around 73 mins per episode.

WB is actually fairer with the UK than most of the other labels, and this is obviously a title that, like Batman, they probably would be releasing in the UK, since it's a major anniversary catalogue release. Unfortunately for Roots, previous UK versions are cut for animal cruelty (cockfighting), so it seems much less likely that the BD will be sold in the UK, since WB would have to manufacture specific Blu-ray Discs omitting the problematic content for the UK. Perhaps there will be a remastered UK DVD, to tie in with the reheat whenever it premieres there, but I wouldn't bet on a specially cut UK BD, as that has not been Warner's protocol for some time, and possibly never with catalogue titles.

It's around £27.00 on WowHD which isn't too bad considering how much you get in terms of mins per £

I don't know how that compares with the Italian release though, it might be cheaper still.

I don't hold out much hope for a UK release. Warners are terrible with catalogue releases here.

At least we know the US discs will be region free and it is getting released in Italy...
