Default The Wheel of Time

Quote:
It looks like Robert Jordan’s high fantasy book series The Wheel of Time could be heading to the small screen, with Jordan’s widow and Wheel of Time editor Harriet McDougal posting the news on her Google+ account.

“Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time,” states McDougal. “Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio.”

The film and TV rights to Wheel of Time were snapped up in 2008 by Red Eagle Entertainment, with the production company paying to air a pilot entitled Winter Dragon on FXX in February of last year, which starred Max Ryan and Billy Zane. This was seen as a last-gasp attempt to keep hold of the rights, and led to the legal issues mentioned in McDougal’s post.

Beginning in 1990 and spanning fourteen volumes, the series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide, meaning an adaptation is sure to be appealing to TV networks looking to capitalise on the popularity of Game of Thrones.

And to think, all it took was one of my favorite authors to actually get the means to finally finish the series.

But WoT is not going to be on GoT's level of entertainment.

Yeah you're right, if they do this justice it'll blow GoT away.

As soon as I saw The Fellowship of the Ring, I thought there would be a huge wave of fantasy novel adaptations, and I would not have minded one bit. The Wheel of Time and Shannara were the first two I imagined. It took much longer than I thought, and they followed the success of Game of Thrones and not LotR, but I say about time. Shannara went to MTV and even though it turned out far better than I thought possible on MTV, it still didn't live up to my expectations. I have much higher expectations of WoT. I know it can be incredible. I hope it goes to a home where it can live up to it's potential. I actually hope it goes to Netflix.

That'd be cool, but my most wanted all time would be The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant...

I'm not even sure it's -possible' to adapt though, whether on film or TV tbh, given the nature of the "hero".

I'm hoping for Netflix or HBO (they'll need something to replace GoT, right? )

Fantastic news, if handled by the right people. I think Shannara was made to teenage-ish, and of course Rand and the gang are young, so they could make it tennage-ish too. Really hope not. One other fantasy adaptation I was looking forward to was The Sword of Truth, and that was absolutely dreadful. On party with the Dungeons and Dragons movies. I'm all in for this following a production style similar to GoT.

It'll blow GoT away if the heavens align and everything sets just right with it. Fourteen books, though...therein is the catch.

Game of Thrones's basis has 5 books out, and A Song of Ice and Fire (the basis) clocks in at about 5.5K pages, roughly, according to Google. They trimmed all that down to accommodate five seasons, excising a lot of content. Ideally, we're looking in dealing with seven, eight seasons overall...8 years.

Wheel of Time has over double that across fourteen books. Exactly how many seasons can they get funding for to ensure it's fully complete? I think 10 seasons is pretty optimistic to fit all that content into, especially if they perform equal excision of content and focus on the critical elements.

There is one hope for the show, though. From what I recall, I don't think they had any children of consequence appear in the books on a recurring basis. So there isn't any real worry about children looking older than they start out at, throwing timelines off. Adults can adult thanks to makeup and not changing much at all, though.

GoT isn't perfect, but it's as close to a medieval-fantasy epic as we got in televised form that was so well received. I am all for getting more of the same genre, and if WoT pulls it off, then it will be a fun reprieve to get the feelings back GoT took from me.

TV Rights to The Wheel of Time Optioned by New Studio, With Jordan Estate’s Approval

Chris Lough
Thu Apr 28, 2016 5:49pm

Harriet McDougal, wife of the late Robert Jordan, dropped some exciting news late Thursday: the TV rights to Jordan’s Wheel of Time fantasy epic have been acquired by a major studio.

In the wake of the success of Game of Thrones, and considering the staggering amount of fantasy and sci-fi book properties that have been optioned for TV and film, the absence of The Wheel of Time has been eyebrow-raising. (Or in the parlance of the series itself, perhaps the better term is “sniff producing”?) Fans of the series were given a glimpse into the legal tangle preventing WOT’s emergence onto the small screen on February 9, 2015, when a sudden pilot episode dubbed “Winter Dragon” aired in the early A.M. hours on the FXX Network. McDougal released a statement clarifying that the pilot was made without her knowledge, prompting Red Eagle Entertainment, the production company behind the pilot, to issue a lawsuit. (Which they later withdrew.) A more detailed account of the behind-the-scenes machinations can be found at io9, but regardless of the details, overall it seemed as if fans would have to wait a very long time to see Jordan’s work on screen in a large-scale production.

Now, the wait is seemingly over.

Announcement

The following is a press statement that has been approved by the studio involved in contract negotiations:
Update: Wanted to share with you exciting news about The Wheel of Time. Legal issues have been resolved. The Wheel of Time will become a cutting edge TV series! I couldn’t be more pleased. Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio — Harriet
McDougal’s update is all the information we have at the moment. As she mentions, the announcement will be coming from the acquiring studio, who are certainly eager to cross all the t’s, dot all the i’s, and get to heralding the big news. Further, it should be noted that this announcement does not mean that a TV series is ready to be put into production, merely that a new studio has acquired the rights to do so.

Still, it’s heartening to hear that Jordan’s work has emerged safely from the path of daggers, ready to make the jump to television!

Have you read the book series? After reading A Song of Ice and Fire, I might jump into it!

No F-ing way?! I thought that project was as good as dead with GOT's momentum. I almost read the first novel (took me ages, as I was too young back then). Sooooo much potential. Bring it on!

I've not read the books but they seem too big for FXX to handle. It would be a shame for a series that is so popular to get to TV and not be handled properly.

Did you search just by thread title?
There is a glitch with search function. If the thread title is inbetween " " it will not show in the search results.

A few years ago at a local book signing for A Memory of Light, I had asked Brandon Sanderson and Harriet McDougal about a film/tv series seeing how popular LotR and GoT have been, and at the time they mentioned Universal. Again this was a few years ago, not sure how much has changed since then.
Either way, very encouraging news! The scope & scale of this series is just mammoth! As a fan of WoT, GoT and Shannara(my all time favorite series)...I really hope this leans more towards the GoT production style than the Shannara production style.
Again as complex as this series is, I don't know how it can even be condensed for tv? I hate to say that as I'd love to see a page for page showing, but it would be impossible...but something is better than nothing!
Looking forward to hearing more about this!

I never knew FXX aired a Wheel of Time pilot with Billy Zane back in 2015.
