Default Star Wars spinoff set for 2020

Disney confirms third standalone Star Wars movie for 2020

Quote:
Full Force ahead: Though no plot details have been released, a writer has already been hired for the new movie.

The Force will be with us for a long time to come. On Thursday, Disney confirmed a third Star Wars film in the standalone series that will begin this December with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

It's set for 2020, so if you're counting, that means those who were born on the same 1977 day as "Star Wars" hit theaters will be 43 when this movie comes out. Since the series' popularity seems to just keep going, someday those same people will be able to take their great-great grandkids to watch a galaxy far, far away unfold on the big screen. (Although by then will we even see movies in theaters? They'll probably just beam them directly to our eyelids.)

Deadline reports that Disney CEO Bob Iger said he's just heard the pitch from the writer working on 2019's "Star Wars Episode IX," and revealed that a writer has been hired for the previously unannounced 2020 film.

So mark your calendars, you've got "Rogue One" this December, Episode VIII in December of 2017, a as-yet-untitled young Han Solo film in 2018, then Episode IX in 2019, and now this movie in 2020. The films are alternating release years between the remaining two of the original series and the three standalone movies.

Iger told Deadline he doesn't expect "Rogue One" to do as well as "The Force Awakens," but he did say that "interest is high." We'll go out on a limb and call that perhaps the biggest understatement since Luke described Ben Kenobi as "a strange old hermit."

Hoping for something set between Episodes VI and VII, lots of unexplored territory there. This will also be the first spinoff to release AFTER the new trilogy is finished.

I'd like at least one of these three standalone films to be set in the old Republic era when the Jedi were in their prime. Maybe even WAY before the prequels, when Yoda first started his training or before the Sith were thought to be extinct.

I want a noir detective story set on the rainy nighttime streets of Coruscant. Yes, Blade Runner for the Star Wars universe.

Hopefully. The most overrated character in the history of storytelling does not need their own movie. He's a putz.

Starting to sound like Star Wars is about to be the Call of Duty of the cinema industry.

Perhaps something set in the PT era? A different take on that period in SW lore could be fascinating. Although, I wouldn't say no to something completely new, as others have noted.

I still don't see them going back to PT-era anytime soon, unless somehow Episodes VIII and IX tie into that trilogy more than expected and help redeem them in the public's eye. Besides, they seem to wanna center these spinoffs around characters or events we're already familiar with, there isn't a whole lot of ground DURING the actual PT left to cover thanks to the Clone Wars show (they could always cover ground between Eps. I and II, but since those are the two least-popular movies in the franchise it just doesn't make a lot of sense).

I see, that makes sense. Perhaps during their next spin-off phase? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of the PT at all, but there's moments here and there I wouldn't mind seeing examined by a fresh mind and a new pair of eyes, if you know what I mean. I'd love a wandering hermit Ben Kenobi film starring McGregor. Just make it like a western set in space. "The Jedi With No Name."

There's a very good chance that's what this spinoff will end up being, but as much as I'd love to see that movie, that sounds like a huge risk.

The fact that this isn't until 2020 throws a lot up in the air. My money is on Obi Wan, since McGregor has stated how much he wants to do one but we'll see.

The stuff I'd really love to see is anything Old Republic or Shadows of the Empire (call that one nostalgia).

I would love an Obi-Wan/McGregor film.

I wouldn't mind some short films to go along with some of these spin offs, kind of like how in front of every cartoon film there is always a short.

An example being Jabba the Hutt. It's been established that Jabba wasn't always a fat, immobile slob. He at one point could slug along on his own. I wanna see his rise from "I go to you" to "No, you come to me" power. Could be a nice gangster film. The Godfather of Star Wars. Thinking about it, that actually would make for a good feature film if done right. At least how I see it in my own head haha.

I just want a film not centered around a death star or any variation thereof. The OT, TFA and Rogue One are more than enough...

I'd watch a show that took place entirely inside the Death Star.

I really want a spin-off movie for IG-88, this guy:

Have a futuristic Steampunk setting on Coruscant, blending the visual and storytelling artistry of Blade Runner. Maybe throw in a bit of the setting from the unreleased video game of Star Wars: 1313 which is all about Bounty Hunters in the underground of Coruscant.

Here is the trailer for that game:

Maybe throw in a few visuals similar to this game:

Then get some techno-esque music, much like a combination of Jabba's Palace music and The Terminator soundtrack.

Throw in a few Darth Maul looking people for IG-88 to hunt down and destroy in the style of RoboCop (1987) and I think that could be a winner.

That does sound interesting but I can't stand another movie dealing with a planet/galaxy destroying mcguffin.
