Microsoft not ruling out BD drive for Xbox

If consumer choose the HD DVD format, then why it's still 2:1 in the USA, 3:1 in Europe, 14:1 in Japan.

I sort of agree... except that I think it would be just TOO FUNNY to see Microsoft have to release a BD drive for the 360 -- especially since that means adding BD-J (Java) capability to their system.

I wouldn't because I bet it would be just as crippled as the HD DVD drive is. No support for the new audio codecs, and a lot of 360's don't have HDMI... And most likely for the price, you can get a stand alone player for just a little more money.

While I recognize the importance of the PS3 in the format war, who cares if xbox has a blu drive? As far as gaming systems go, the xbox is a far superior product when multi-player gaming is concerned. Having a blu-player would only help push the format even further.

The same way that the fate HD-DVD rested on the decision of Warner Bros., the fate of Playstation 3 depends on its ability upgrade the multiplayer capabilities and to keep exclusive RPG titles that would render it a required piece of gaming equipment to most console gamers. Square is already launching a large RPG title for the Xbox 360 and I suspect if it is a success there is a chance that PlayStation could lose Final Fantasy exclusivity. If that would happen, I can foresee the death of the PlayStation console.

Before I get murdered alive for my comments, I would like to say that I fully support Sony and the Blu effort. I just think that they really need to kick it up a notch as far as the gaming/multiplayer portion of the PlayStation is concerned and I don't get behind supporting the inferior product just because of brand loyalty. If that was the case I would be in the HD-DVD camp.

Have you play Warhawk?? That puts the multi in online gaming experience. It doesn't lag, it doesn't freeze, so much going on screen at once and the server is FREE!

But put that aside, there's games like Killzone 2 and Haze coming up.
Look up those, they look fantastic!

Not to mention this large RPG you are reffering to by Square for the 360. What is it? The Last Remnant? That's also for the PS3 as well. So it's not like it is exclusive or anything.

PS3 is a year behind 360, remember that. It took the 360 almost two years to get a title like Halo 3.

The PS3 is a powerful machine, and it has plenty of room to grow.

I don't think so. They could not use it for games therefore it will NOT happen. They would rather users download movies on their network and SONY would rather users buy a PS3 = it's a lose/lose situation for both if Blu-Ray shows up on the crapbox 360.

The next generation of Microsoft video game console surely will have a Blu-Ray drive built in but it will be used for games AND movies but primarily Microsoft will put it in there for games (size of disk). I would'nt put it past Microsoft to ship the new console with the movie playback functions of the Blu-Ray drive "de-activated"... that way people keep downloading their movies (they would probably sell an "activation" kit or something).

I just read on yahoo today that MS is leaning toward blu-ray because of consumer demand. but what im worried about is, if the Xbox 360 were to come with a built in blu-ray, wouldn't that take away one of sony's advantages over MS?

Let me look back again at the chart from Toshiba...

Toshiba (standalone + Add on) = 49.3%

Sony + Samsung = 43.1%

I estimate Pana around 4% according to the graph...

So -pure- Blu Ray = 47% vs say 49% for HD DVD, and 4% of combos (mmh, where are Sharp or Philips in there? Blu Ray exclu. nm).

This chart obviously does not include the PS3s. That's obvious.
So wait... Doesn't make sense if we include the add ons with this latest declaration.
Ok, let's say the Add ons aren't actually included in this chart (Tosh would be stupid not to include em, as they do produce them, but /shrug).

So what MS tells us, is that -according to them-, they sold nearly as many Add ons as Toshiba ever sold HD DVDs? From 1/3rd in November (total 750k, including 269k Add ons) to 50% of the total of HD DVD players?

Why do I smell a huge load of BS here?

Microsoft will be producing a BD add-on within 14 months. As momentum for Blu-ray builds and it becomes a key selling point for the PS3(even more so now that Blu-ray has won the format war) Microsoft will do anything to stop Xbox 360 owners from picking up a PS3.
