Is it really worth it to wait for a 1.3 receiver? Don't most blu-ray players decode most of the major codecs internally in the player? I'm getting the PS3 maybe later a $500 toshiba. And plan to spend under $1k for a receiver. Any advantage to waiting? and how long you think would the wait be?

There are currently no 1.3 recievers and there won't be any in the under 1k price range until probably another year or so. So probably not. You can always run 6 RCAS for PCM.

Taken from the HDMI faq (www.hdmi.org):
Q: Do I need v1.3 HDMI to hear the new Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master HD audio content on HD-DVD or BluRay players? No. HDMI has the flexibility to transport these new high definition, lossless audio formats in either an uncompressed PCM stream, or as an encoded stream. Both Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD, as well as DTS Master HD bitstreams are transportable over all versions of HDMI as decoded PCM output signals for A/V receivers. To use PCM outputs, consumers should make sure that their HD-DVD/Blu-ray players support the decoding of the HD audio formats into multi-channel PCM, and that their AV receiver or preamp processor supports multi-channel PCM over the HDMI inputs. Newer devices with HDMI 1.3 support may also offer the option to transport the high definition audio formats as a compressed, encoded stream that will be decoded by the A/V receiver (whereas the above transport method has the playback device performing the decoding). " Whether the PS3 supports decoding into an uncompressed multichannel PCM stream over HDMI I don't know. |

I think I will just enjoy the optical for now. I think I can wait the year or so for a 1.3 hdmi receiver. I bought my current receiver in 2004, I don't want to buy that often. Off topic from my thread start I will keep my Sony HS51 720p, bought that in early 2005. I think I will wait for brighter 1080p to come out under $4k. It may take a year or two. Also I can watch 1.85 movies on my 32 1080i (the actual res is probably lower than that) hd if I want a little nicer look on comedy movies.
