Interesting that Click was number 9.
Since many on the AVS forum are saying it is a worthless film ![]() But yeah this concept has been covered already. What maybe has not is the number of these that we expect to actually get released. 1) Almost certainly no release this year 2) Almost certainly no release this year 3) Rumoured 11/14 BD only 4) Rumoured December? (I need to look that up) BD Only 5) Announced both formats 6) Announced BD only 7) Almost certainly no release this year 8) Announced Dec 12 BD only 9) Released BD only 10) Announced both formats. So 7 of the top 10 movies are BD releases this year. 2 are HD DVD releases for this year. Half of the top 10 movies will be released this year exclusively on Bluray (unless Da Vinci does not get released here in 2006). This has got to look good on the shelves. |

You all got it wrong.
"Chinese players and Joe Six Pack are carrying HD-DVD to the quick finish line. The format war is already over." Jeez, how many times do you all have to be told this? ![]() ![]() |

I think that can be summarised byy saying the key is if or when these exclusive studios decide to support both formats.
There is no way a format can do well in the long term if 'half the good movies' are not available. and it seems that however we choose to break down the popular movie list, around 50% are BD exclusive the way things stand today. Personally I think the 'will be released in 2006' list is more important since the standings are less likely to change in that time frame - by the end of the year, studios might have widened their product offering ![]() I noticed yesterday that the BD / HD DVD stand at Best Buy in Sunnyvale has moved again. Now it is the first thing you see entering the store. So the title choice is going to be 'in your face' going forward... |

That's 50% exclusive but not 50% of all movies will be missing (at least not from the Blu-ray side). A format would do just fine with about 90% total support (that's Blu-ray), but the other studio (Universal) is more likely to give in than all of the Blu-ray exclusive studios.

The thing you guys are missing is this.
There are some movies that people go to watch in the movie and after that they have little desire to own the movie. There are some movies that people don't watch much in the Theatre but the DVD sells like gangbusters. You're trying to tell me that just because a movie is a top grosser means it'll be a hot HD movie sale and that's false. The larger grossing movies tend to heavily advertised fare that receive a lot of theater plays. Smaller movies tend to have limited distribution but do fairly well in movie sales. Patting yourself on the back because of exclusive studios and top grossing movies smacks of fanboism. I don't have ANY doubts that Universal will be Blu-Ray by years end 2007 but I also don't have ANY doubts that Buena Vista /Disney and LGF will be HD DVD as well. |

If your going to have this perspective then have some factual data to back it. For your information, top grossing films such as "Click" we get 200 copies in on release date. Lesser anticipated titles we'll get 50 or less in. The only time I saw Best Buy miss the boat was on the launch of Napoleon Dynomite when it launched we got 15 titles, and sold out in the first hour. Best Buy quickly realized they had a hit and had 150 titles in the following week. |
