Default The Philips BDP9000 Review thread

Tyler10,

I ordered mine on Sept. 9th, and when I called I also gave her my specific order # and she used that to look it up and confirm that I would still be getting mine from the October 25th shipment. And less than 24 hrs later I got the email telling me that it had been postponed.

But all is well, I made some calls, BestBuy said they would be getting the Philips but did not know when, and then I called the local Walmart and they said they had 3 in stock and ready to sell. So I now have one hooked up and tested with some clips from Underworld: Evolution and it works great. Takes about 17 seconds from pushing the close door button until the movie comes on the screen, but it looks great and it is loading and playing no glitches right out of the box. I've also quickly run through some of the 'previews' on the Underworld blu-ray disk, and also put in a regular DVD and they just load and play like they should. And if you go to the scene selections it takes maybe 5 or 6 seconds to start the selected scene.

And I know what some of the others on this forum say about people who buy their home theater equipment from Walmart, but hey, they had the Philips in stock and ready to go, and also $100 less than Amazon who said they would not be able to ship until the end of December so I don't think it really matters where you buy it as long as they have the product that you want. And I think I will be happy with the Philips for a few years until the prices come down and then I can think about upgrading to a higher quality firm such as Pioneer or whom ever might be in the market at that point. But I doubt I will be giving ANY Sony product a really close look for quite a while at this point.

Anyway, I have Blu-ray disks to watch, so I'll be signing off now. If you all get tired of waiting for Sony to release their player, give the Philips some consideration. Then make a few calls and see if a store near you has it in stock and ready to go.

Default Pics

For Josh,

I took a few pics for you, they might be a little blurry. I'm very happy with the Philips, I watched 3 Blu-ray movies last night (Total Recall, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and House of Wax, and then copied some photos onto a memory stick and put them in the player's memory card slot. And then went to the main menu and clicked down to the photos menu section and then show them in a slide show. I did not turn it off at all during this and there was no problem with it playing movie after movie and then switching to the slide show.

And I thought the movies looked great. No dropped frames, or locking up or stuttering, etc. And the menu's worked just fine, letting me pull them up and change audio options on the disks that had more than one without stoping the movie.

The front of the player has a fold down front on just the bottom part of the front which covers the memory stick slots and the manual controls for the player if you do not want to use the remote. But does not cover the tray slot or the button for the tray.

Thanks Jim! I like the blue band on the top of the tray. That's a nice tough. Glad to hear you are enjoying it!

When the heck did this happen? Does the Phillips decode the new lossless audio codecs?

Hi guys. I just picked up the Philips at Wal-Mart, and it is definitely a re-badged Samsung. I'll post comparison pics of the back panel if you like.

Folks,

I saw a Philips Bluray Disc player in Fry's today, which I think has not been reported before.

So if you are looking to get one in a brick and mortar, Fry's looks to be an option.

I also saw the Philips Triple Writer in stock or $600.

Nope, not at this point of time. But slowly, i believe more functions will be added in when the blu-ray technology get to its mature state. just like the dvd.

Default Firmware Update Available

Just to let everyone with a Philips player know, there is a new firmware update available on the Philips website as of 5-22-07.

I installed it today, seems to work fine. I didn't notice any particular improvements in the player's performance, but then I've never had any problems with the Philips anyway.

How long has this player been selling for $299? I had no idea there was a Blu-Ray player cheaper then the PS3 out now!!

Is this new or what the heck is going on? Am I living under a rock?

http://www.outlet.philips.com/b2c_re...og&shop=OUTLET

And all those times I sat and listened to people talk about how you can't get a Blu-Ray player for under $400...damn.

I wonder how much import duty you pay on this item if you order from Toronto or anywhere in Canada?

Good question, it doesn't look like you can order to ship to Canada from that site. I checked the Canadian site but couldn't even find the player there.
Too bad really that's a fantastic price. I'd consider picking one up (although the new profile 1.1 Panasonic is where my heart is).

Read the small red print saying it's a "factory renewed" unit. So, basically it's a refurb.
I bought mine brand new off of Ebay 6 months ago for $200 and have gotten a lot of mileage out of it. I've been very happy with it, but it will become a hand-me-down in a month or so because the new Panny interests me very much.

Nope. Only the last 2 Sammy's and Pioneers have one. Besides the PS3.

Ratatouille and Cars do not play correctly on my Philips BDP9000. Both movies will play correctly the first half of the movie and then both start to skip. The DVD's are both fine and play ok in my sons PS3 and my other Sony BDP-S300. I installed the October firmware update available on the Philips' web site but it made no difference.

Is anyone else having a similar issue with the latest releases of BD+ DVD's? I think it may be the dual-layer technology is causing a problem with this 1st-Generation player.
