Default The Guilty - Remake Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Source: Deadline

Jake Gyllenhaal To Star In Remake Of Danish Oscar Entry ‘The Guilty’
by Patrick Hipes - December 10, 2018 6:15pm

Bold Films and Nine Stories said Monday they have acquired rights to remake The Guilty, the suspense thriller that currently serves as Denmark’s entry into the Oscar Foreign Language Film race.

Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star in the pic, which won the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year. The plot centers on a police officer under investigation who is demoted to desk-work at an emergency call center. When he receives a terrified phone call from a kidnapped woman, he must battle his internal demons in order to save her.

All the action in Gustav Möller’s directorial debut was set in the police station.

Magnolia Pictures acquired the original pic after its Sundance success and released it in the U.S. in October.

Variety first reported today’s news.

God dammit. No. There's literally ZERO reason to remake this.

I definitely want to watch the original but there is a reason for them to make an American version. If it's an interesting story why not make a version American audiences will watch. I say that because on average a large percentage of people don't care to get into foreign films, especially if they have subtitles.

Nonsense, Fuqua is an experienced capable director who has a history with Gyllenhaal. He directed him in Southpaw. I’m sure Jake approves of the hire.

Imagine being NetFlix and paying $30 million for a movie that anyone can already watch right now on Hulu.

No.

The original starred Swedish-born Danish actor Jakob Cedergren.

It wasn't bad, Gyllenhaal was probably the best part of it, kinda like his other movie with Fuqua SOUTHPAW. I'm sure if anything this one will be a hit with Netflix's true crime/thriller-style fanbase.

It was ok. But the original was so much better. The remake goes for a Hollywood ending whereas the Danish film is far darker and more ambiguous. Plus I preferred Cedergren's more subtle performance vs Gyllenhaal's teary-eyed portrayal.

The subtlety and nuance is what made the original so powerful. The remake is so over-dramatic and loud.

Watched this over the weekend and enjoyed it! You can def tell this was made in the beginning of the Pandemic. The film takes place in 3 rooms and everyone is at least 6 feet apart lol. But, yeah good twist and Jake does what he does best, which is playing a character who is on edge and is about to break. One of the better Netflix original films.
