Nice. But I prefer the upcoming 4K UHD though.

Seems like a bizarre one to release unless they have a ton of new extras. An upcoming 4K disc would add a lot of competition for this.

If they rescanned the OCN at 4K, which they probably won't, it would be one sweet UHD release. But instead they'll just go to the 2K DI and... Well, just see the Shaun of the Dead 4K / Hot Fuzz 4K / The World's End 4K releases for an indication on how it will look.

Not for me. And I f***ing love this movie.

It just feels like Arrow are saying - "instead of increased resolution and an HDR pass, howzabout some snazzy newly commissioned artwork and a rigid slipcase, huh!?"

Have to agree with this. I also love IG and am a huge sucker for packaging but I have zero interest in another Blu-ray edition. I grabbed Crimson Peak because I couldn't resist that box set but the madness has to stop somewhere. Now, I'd kill for an Arrow edition of Death Proof/Planet Terror

Oh I'd be all over that, I haven't bothered upgrading from the 6-disc Japanese DVD set.

Movies with digital intermediates do not typically have conformed OCNs. Going back to the OCN would require completely reconstructing the film. There are tools to help with that, like iConform, but it's far more involved than I'm getting the impression you think it is. There's a reason why this is so rarely done.

They did it with various TV shows that were shot on film but edited on video, and which at the time nobody imagined would ever be shown in resolutions as high as HD. If they could dig up the original film elements of those shows, which are dozens of hours long, I'm sure they would have much less trouble doing it for a 2-3 hour movie.

Indeed, but they're still the exception rather than the norm and CBS were so put off by the response to TNG that they're going nowhere near the remaining SD Treks for a HD rebuild. They've gone ahead with rebuilding MacGyver and Charmed but even those releases have stalled on disc and are streaming only after the first seasons. Warners redid Friends in HD as they had the foresight to cut the show to negative and not just leave it as an unconformed mass of celluloid, so it was an easier transition to make than people might assume (though they still needed to redo any VFX in HD).

It's not simply about having the film elements to hand as they won't just magically leap out of their canisters into the scanner. It still costs time, effort and, most importantly, money https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=662 to rebuild any given 2K DI show in 4K and as such these things are few and far between. Fox did it for The Martian's UHD and Sony have done a few (being one of the few studios that insists upon creating a cut negative for a show shot on film but finished on a DI) but even they are cutting corners now e.g. Moon's UHD was an upscale.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

As for the 4K pushback in this thread people have been quite civil about it, and we get enough "1080p is good enough for me!" whiners in the 4K threads so I'll call it a draw. We complain in here, y'all complain in there. This is the way of things.

If they manage to impress, then I'll be buying. If just a minor upgrade then I'm okay with what I have.

Unless there's a copious collection of deleted scenes (like the ones with Gong Li), I'd probably pass.
