Cool Is Blu-ray your last "hurrah" or would you upgrade again?

This is NOT about "movie downloads" . Sure, it will happen. But hard media is here to stay. Please stay on topic.

I have said it before, "Blu-ray is my last hurrah." While the potential of some movies is not fully realized on BD, there is little incentive to ever upgrade again to yet another new format.

Even *IF* 2k and 4k home monitors become affordable, do I want to dip again in a new technology? Isn't it bad enough a number of people dipped for the numberous formats like LaserDisc, VHS, & DVD? Not to mention any number of re-releases.

Sure, it's easy to say "never again" when you are holding the best in your hand. Didn't we say the same about DVD? But with blu-ray any new offerings will seem to have diminishing returns. This is high def people. Higher Def may not matter to us.

Has blu-ray become the "good enough" technology to outlive all other formats combined?

When I first started buying DVD I thought the same thing...this is it.

So I think if I'm being honest to myself, YEAH I'd trade up again.
Depends on how well my BR upconverts! hehe

If higher def is out in 15 years or something I will want it to feed my 200" organic laser coldfusion-powered display.

It would really have to be a huge jump in storage or resolution because I just don't know how much more the eye can discerne.

If resolution is the only upgrade, Blu-ray seems to be good enough for the size we have now. Anything larger would be wasted on this size screen.
However, if something like 3D technology or the like was to come around... I might consider an upgrade.

But for the size screens we have now, Blu-ray is all you need.

I will upgrade again if it remains a physical format that offers clear advantages over what is already available.

Unfortunately we new Dvd was going to die young. I was a early Dvd adopter but even then Hd was around the corner and Dvd was going to be left behind. I had faith in backwards compatibility that would allow your old Dvds to stay in use. Neither Hdm format has let us down in backwards compatibility. I still have alot of Dvds left over and not all of them are going to be replaced. Only my favorites will be re bought.

As long as I can see an advantage to new tech, (and I'm sure I will) I'm not against upgrading. They're always coming up with better "stuff".

I'm going to assume that when the next format comes out, there will be better technology for actually recording the source material. We can increase the resolution endlessly, but we can only pull the detail out of the source material. I don't think there's much that can really be brought out.

I also would say I doubt it'll be a tv format. Maybe for super high def projectors. I could see 20 years down the line our entire wall being filled up with an image that's indistinguishable from reality. Thing is, for movies being made now, might as well just upscale the blu-ray, but there will be super high def cameras then.

I don't see us entering some Matrix world anytime soon. The amount of progress we'd need is staggering, we haven't even mastered something yet like cochlear implants.

Is Blu-ray the best that we can get or the best that is noticeable? I read some of the other responses about having bigger HDTVs. If we had 60" HDTVs, then we could get high resolution. But how many people are going to buy that big of a HDTV to see a little bit of a clearer picture? Blu-ray may be the best of the best for a long long time, like 20 years. I'm sure in the far away future something will beat out Blu-ray, but can a picture really get any clearer with better audio? The only other technology I can see after Blu-ray is having a little bit better quality picture and video on nintendo gamecube size discs.

See, I agree with you completely, but then I think to myself, "what did people say when dvd came out? what did they say when color tv was an option, what did they say when the first polaroid camera came out?" It's too hard to say because all along people keep saying 'can this get any better' and it has an probably will continue to.

I have long said that 3" disc may be the next progression in home video. While such movies do exist for the PSP they certainly are not blu-ray quality. The problem is finding a spectrum of light with a wavelength short enough to read such high densities reliably. Once we exhaust the spectrum, then what?

That is one thing I will miss when I am gone. Watching all the amazing technology come and go. Youth is great, but I am glad I lived in an era to witness a lot of change.

I look at it this way...... I may say "no" I'm gonna upgrade what I have with the best of the current tech. out there, but a new format... "nah"

But I know that's not true..... When I saw that little 11" OLED I just had to have one..... in the future..... IN MY CAR. I have a small 7" TFT in my SUV now, but I can only imagine how nice it would be to get gps, etc. in picture perfect clarity..... So I never really rule out upgrading!

As long as Hollywood continues to use 24/48 for sound masters, I will be fine with Blu-ray.

I have always been disappointed with the jump in quality from the audio on DVD to CD's, Vinyl, SACD's and DVD-Audio discs and now the quality for movies on disc has finally caught up.

For Hollywood to change to 24/96 all the HDD space required for every movie would double, so it will be a while before that happens.

Even when it does, dts-ma and TrueHD will still handle it losslessly without infringing on video bandwidth.

Audio is the #1 reason I chose Blu-ray and I am at a happy level right now.

I think the next disc format will be another one based on Blu-ray technology anyway, with 200GB discs and 288 Mbps bandwidth.

Blu-ray2, Super Blu-ray, Blu-ray Ultra, etc.

I remember when I still in Jr. High, I used to buy lots of anime, and I would see the VHS's next to the DVD's, and I would always go for the VHS not knowing what the DVD even was. When I learned what a DVD was, I still though the VCR would be around forever. In high school my parents finally bought a Sony DVD player (it was like $250 at the time), and I was so amazed, I replaced all my VHS stuff with DVD's, and still think I was an idiot for buying all those VHS tapes (if only I would have saved that money ). I knew about Blu-ray a few months prior to the PS3 coming out, I had not even heard of HD-DVD, but history repeats itself, I was like "why buy a Blu-player, I just got a Samsung up-conversion players like 3 months ago;" well I saw the S300 playing at Best Buy and pushed my parents to buy it, and they did right away cause they thought it was the best thing ever in HD (which it is so far, meaning the technology, not the S300), and I got the PS3 back in November, and a Vaio with a Blu-ray drive a few months ago. All I've been buying are Blu-ray movies, and so have my parents.

...so anyways, long story short, I've learned my lesson, Blu-ray is not here to stay forever (just another 5-8 years maybe), and when a new technology comes out I will adopt it after a few months.

I do love Blu-ray Technology though, it is amazing!!
