Default Major Dundee (1965)

https://www.diabolikdvd.com/product/...-ray-preorder/

Quote:
After making his first bonafide classic in Ride the High Country, director Sam Peckinpah took a step towards the epic with Major Dundee. The film would, in many ways, define the rest of his career both on screen and off, as the drama behind the camera matched the action in front of it.

Charlton Heston stars as Major Amos Dundee, a vainglorious Union Cavalry officer, who mounts an expedition to hunt down Apache war chief Sierra Charriba. Building his own army of criminals, ex-slaves and Confederate POWs – among them one Captain Ben Tyreen (Richard Harris), whose intense former friendship with Dundee is tainted with a sense of betrayal on both sides – Dundee heads into Mexico, his eye fixed firmly on a last shot at greatness.

Legendarily acerbic, Major Dundee would be the first time that Peckinpah had a movie taken away from him. While a director’s cut may be lost to us, this Limited Edition shows us the thrilling, morally complex epic that Peckinpah was aiming for. Beautifully shot and with a stellar supporting cast including James Coburn, Warren Oates, and L.Q. Jones, it remains a stunning achievement and an essential experience for anyone interested in the life and cinema of “Bloody Sam.”

I am a Peckinpah fan but have not yet seen this. Should I give it a shot? I currently own (and love) 'The Wild Bunch' 'Straw Dogs' and 'Alfredo Garcia'. Used to own 'The Getaway', which I liked but could live with out. Used to own 'The Osterman Weekend' which I hated and also used to own 'Pat Garret and Billy The Kid' which I thought was mediocre but would want to revisit in HD one day.

It’s essential as the stepping stone between High Country and The Wild Bunch but know going in it was butchered and never finished as intended. To those of us who love it it’s a film whose spell weaves over you. The restored scene do help this quite a bit. Personally I think the film is great in spite of its imposed issues and I go so far as to say it’s my favorite Heston onscreen performance matched by Richard Harris going toe to toe in addition to many Peckinpah regulars and a nice showy part for Coburn.

I missed out on the TT release, so I'll gladly be adding this one to the collection! Too bad it won't be in native 4K but it is what it is.

I didn’t get the TT Blu because it didn’t have the extended cut with mono. Then it went OOP and I immediately regretted it. Then came the German media book which I was ordering when the pandemic hit. Then came the fancy box Imprint edition which was just too expensive for one film. I had hoped Indicator or someone would do this film with all the new extras and a great encoding job. I’ve been dying to hear the Glenn Erickson commentary track as his Savant column has been one of the lone champions of this film.

I am over the moon right now. This can’t get here fast enough. The art is gorgeous and looks like an older book jacket almost.

You didn't miss out on much with the Imprint release, the encoding and compression was terrible. This looks like a terrific and comprehensive package and I'm looking forward to buying it.

You're in for a real treat. I have the German release with Erickson's first commentary, and it's essential for an understanding of the film. He goes back to the original script and novelization and fills in what was cut and/or never shot. Looks like this release also includes the second commentary that he did for Imprint. This will be my third Blu-Ray copy of Major Dundee. For me the additional extras make it worth the purchase.

Between this and Killer Elite reissue. Is this the year of Peckinpah? Can we finally get Pat Garrett?

Was it really that bad? I’ve been curious about their releases but the expense is just too much. Now they’re doing The President’s Analyst.

The Imprint is encoded in the wrong color space (noticeable in reds being redder than they should) and it’s littered with “pulsing”.

Man, I’ve never been happier for pushing off buying a release than I am now. I kept looking at that and almost getting it then it went out of print.

Wow, nice to see this is coming from Arrow. I only recently discovered - to my dismay - that the previous edition was a TT release and has been long OOP. Slowly building my Peckinpah collection (currently have Alfredo Garcia, Straw Dogs and Ride the High Country) so I'll definitely be picking this up.

How is The Killer Elite btw? It's one of his that I've never seen and the reviews seem to be lukewarm at best.
